Holl-Kintner: Home of Accounting and Business, Education, Communication Studies (and WBKE, Oak Leaves), Religion and Philosophy, Modern Languages, Economics … eventually, after we get the funding. College Advancement is working on it and would be most happy to discuss naming possibilities with any and all interested parties. We’ve got classrooms large and small, faculty offices, entire floors, a conference center …. The plan is to empty the third floor of the Administration Building, as well as the Communication Building. When done, inside, Holl-Kintner will totally change, and become accessible!

This is way, way cool … Christer Watson (physics) is part of a nine-member team to gain 250 hours of observation using the orbiting Spitzer Space Telescope to study the three-dimensional thickness of the inner part of the Milky Way. The project is led by Bob Benjamin of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, whose study of the Milky Way has received considerable media attention. Other investigators hail from the University of Nottingham, University of California-Berkley, Instituut voor Sterrenkunde and the Space Science Institute. Observing starts in the fall and will be completed next calendar year. The grant also funds a student summer research project at Manchester, associated equipment and travel.

Manchester College has earned $25,000 in seed funding for “Difficult Dialog,” an initiative to engage all first-year students in a semester-long discussion of some of society’s most challenging issues, emphasizing the skill of dialog and the improvement of the quality of discourse on campus and beyond. We’ll begin the discussion next fall. We, and Marian College, won the 2006 Ball Brothers Foundation Venture Fund competition for the seed funding. There were 25 proposals.

Here’s yet another congratulations muttered through our tears … Professor Lindan Hill will become dean of the School of Education at Marian College in Indianapolis on July 1. Our department chair will leave us at the end of the month. Quoth Dean Sharfman: This is a wonderful opportunity for Lindy to build a program and he is excited about the opportunity. Lindy has served Manchester College very well in his five years and was instrumental in helping us receive NCATE accreditation, for which we are eternally grateful.” Their gain, our loss.

Gosh, I didn’t know that … Many of us do know that the winner of the Indianapolis 500 last weekend was Sam Hornish Jr. Stay with me now …. Sam zipped past the Andretti dynasty just 300 yards from the brickyard to win by .0635 of a second. But did you know that he is a member of the Church of the Brethren?????

Construction Zone. Park somewhere else, Part II. Just a reminder that the parking lot on the south side of the College Union (upper Union lot) is now reserved for the exclusive use of the construction crew. Parking for us and visitors is available in the lot north of the Union, or along East Street near Cordier Auditorium. We trained for this on the Science Center.

June 10 is Manchester College Day at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo!!!! Details to come ….

Wouldn’t this make a great gift? Do you needlepoint? Know somebody who does? MC is seeking a needlepointer to create several of the pictured needlepoints for staff appreciation gifts. (For a closer look, see Jill Biehl). Contact Alicia Redinger, x5436.

Service learning. That’s the subject of a project that Rusty Coulter-Kern (psychology) will lead after winning a $3,000 Scholarship of Engagement Faculty Grant from Indiana Campus Compact and Lilly Endowment. The official title: Using Grounded Theory to Assess Student Experiences in Service-Learning Courses. Congratulations, Rusty!

Inclusion: No Child Left on Their Behind. Indiana Campus Compact also thought that title, and the proposal, are rather catchy. Kim Duchane (health/physical education) has received a $3,000 Scholarship of Engagement Faculty Grant funded by Lilly Endowment for his project.  Notes ICC: “There were a large number of high quality submissions and the competition was strong.” We are strong because we’re in great shape!

I know! I know! A waterpark! A group of VPs will begin looking at how to use the space in Calvin Ulrey after the College Union is complete. Both Career Services and the Campus Store are scheduled to move into the renovated Union, allowing for some new occupants and reconfiguration of space. No decisions have been made yet and the group intends to begin with a very broad look at possibilities, says our executive veep, Dave McFadden, who also is chairing the committee. E-mail him with your suggestions. What a challenge, considering we all know he has a sense of humor ….

Welcome to the MC staff! Jamie A. Gaston, Custodian; Mary Ann McWithey, Accountant; Megan E. Harlow, Summer Hall Director for Conference services; Kim Meyers, instructor of communication studies; and ...

We have a new face in the Dean’s Office – Kim Meyer of Huntington, who will serve as Dean Sharfman’s administrative assistant. She comes with experience in the Admissions Office at IPFW, where she earned a degree in business with a minor in psychology.

It’s time for the unveiling (and hanging) of yet another historical mural restored by Jim Adams* and his art students. You may recall that the first mural rescued from the former La Fontaine Hotel is hanging high in the Huntington County Historical Museum. This one was down in the former pool area and you can imagine how wretched it looked. The hotel now is restored into La Fontaine Center, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary on June 11. The unveiling begins at 2 p.m., in the center.

* 2002 U.S. Professor of the Year

We get a threefer next year from the Brown family. That’s gotta be kinda rare, don’t you think? Ken Brown, who doesn’t understand the concept of retirement, will teach peace and justice concepts. Son Michael continues in the philosophy classroom. And … Daughter Katy, who begins in January as an assistant professor of philosophy.

Yet another of our grads heads off to international assignment … Katie Leese is the recipient of a French Government Teaching Assistantship. She will teach French elementary students near Rouen, in the north of France. Her assignment runs October through April. Thanks to Janina Traxler, who shepherded our May grad through the process!

Jacquilline Nagila will assume leadership of Multicultural Services and campus diversity in mid-July 2006. She is completing her master’s degree in international and comparative education at Indiana University, where she is the diversity education specialist and teaching assistant for Indiana University Residential Programs and Services.

We’d like to advise you about Advising and Registration Days … an opportunity to welcome our new students’ parents. The reception on each of the four days is 4:30 to 5 p.m. in Link Art Gallery and Wine Recital Hall lobby – on June 12, June 17, June 28 and July 7. The parents will have just left a brief wrap-up session in Winger. Of course, many faculty members will be off helping the students with their course registration, and will not be available. But, if your schedule permits … come mingle!

Because she just can’t get enough of that pace-setting music, President Switzer delivered the commencement address Wednesday night to the Class of 2006 of Speedway High School, down Indy way. Manchester College … we’re everywhere.

Congratulations to Officers Fred Lucas and Harold Napier for their successful completion of the Emergency Medical Technician course. This course is very challenging, but Fred and Harold stuck with it, and are now certified EMTs!

We wish to thank Manchester College faculty, staff and students for expressions of sympathy following the death of Charles's mother. Thanks, also, to faculty and staff for the lovely plant.

                               – Charles and Dagny Boebel

Thank you for the magnificent planter. It added color and comfort to the church and to our home. It’s good to be remembered at a tough time! The Schalls –Jennifer (IRC coordinator), JoAnn and Janine

Sweet! Manchester College shows up in the most interesting places … even recipe books. On Page 21 of Just Desserts cookbook of the Marion Church of the Brethren is a recipe for Mandelbrot crisp almond bread, shared by our Jo, who was solicited for the “celebrity corner.”

Let them eat … lunch! During the summer, the Business Office will close for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. The office opens at 8 a.m.; closes at 5 p.m.

Summertime, and the living is eeeeee-zeeeeeee. Actually, it’s EZLabor all the time. Pay periods end on the 8th and 23rd of each month. That means we need to get our EZLabor “stuff” completed by noon the following day. Here are the dates we need to have our time reconciled in EZLabor, by noon, for the rest of the year:

June 9 and 26

July 10 and 24

August 9 and 24

September 11 and 25

October 9 and 24

November 9 and 27

December 11 and 27

Wow!     Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

Ever wonder how all those grads get up there, in order? How they wind among the chairs and people and not end up in the wrong row, or seat? Gary Montel, master usher of Manchester College commencement, is just one of our enormous team. He doesn’t even know we took this photo. This cheer is for every single person who helped send off our mission into the world on May 21. And to greenhorn Terri Jones, who magnificently executed Kay’s thick binder of Graduation Day to yet another successful celebration.

Thank you and high fives to MC Officer Clarence Griese for his diligence in reuniting a lost child with his parents following commencement. Clarence’s knack for working with children enabled him to keep the child calm until the parents were located.

Take me to Spartan Weekly!

MC's weekly update by Doug Shoemaker, sports information director

Golf cheaply, thanks to a friend.  In the interest of wellness, a gift again is partially underwriting Sycamore Golf Club corporate membership for full-time employees of Manchester College.  The membership covers green fees for unlimited play. Employees pay on a sliding scale based on their College income:

·         $50 per year if your income from the College is less than $25,000

·         $100 per year if between $25,000 and $35,000

·         $150 per year if over $35,000

MC employees can get a family annual membership by paying an additional $200 directly to Sycamore Golf Club. Individual memberships are regularly $550 and family memberships regularly $750 per year.  Pay in our Business Office.  Sounds too good to be true? Dave McFadden at x5226 will make a believer out of you.

Mark your calendars! for the all-staff meetings, intended to update us on College issues and to strengthen our sense of unity and commitment to the Mission. At these meetings, we’ll also recognize service, do a Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings will start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts of campus we rarely see.
