Transitions …

Is it possible you have not heard that Tom Jarman is retiring as director of athletics and head wrestling coach on Aug. 1? Here are the details, and reaction from the national and HCAC level.

Jan Fahs has submitted her resignation, effective at the end of the 2007-2008 academic year, ending 12 years as a guiding force not only in the Accounting and Business Department, but also to the campus at large. Writes Dean Sharfman: “While I am very sad about Jan’s leaving the College, I am respectful of her reasons of needing to spend more time with her wonderful boys, David and Matthew. Jan has worked tirelessly on behalf of Manchester and of her students, and I am deeply grateful for all that she has accomplished. She has been a strong advocate for the liberal arts and an innovator in the teaching of business in the classroom.”

Shelly Leifer, who has helped students and their families manage their financial obligations to the College for the past five years, is about to become the new assistant director of The Community Foundation of Wabash County. We’ll celebrate her service and wish her well on her last day here, 2 to 3 p.m. this Friday, June 29 in the main hall of the Administration Building.

Welcome to Manchester College! Carol G. Horn, Adjunct Instructor of Education; Judd A. Case, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies; Heather M. Varner, Admissions Tele-Counselor; Bonnie S. O’Connell, Director of Academic Support; Joanna J. Conner, Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach; Audrey N. Hampshire; Peace Studies Intern; Steven D. Crain, Campus Pastor; Katie M. Laier, Associate Director of Recruiting; Linda T. Karlin, Visiting Instructor of Accounting and Business; Daniel J. Sprunger, Baseball Coach Intern; Stacy L. Erickson, Assistant Professor of English; Sara D. Bowlin, Residence Hall Director, and ...

Sherri Shockey returns to Manchester College as director of student financial services, after slipping away in 1998 to serve in a similar role for the School of Nursing of Lutheran Hospital and then St. Francis. She’s been with Grace College for the past two years. The drive for the North Manchester resident becomes much shorter on July 30. (She was a MC financial aid counselor 1988-97.)

Mark that calendar …

All-Staff meets in a new place … the College Union, for its summer meeting this Thursday, June 28. Refreshments and conversation begin at 7:30 a.m., the meeting at 8 a.m., in Conference Room 2, upstairs.

The end of the College’s fiscal year is at hand … June 30 is the last day, for those seeking to boost the staff and faculty percentage of giving. Grant-givers (especially The Lilly Endowment) consider such employee generosity in making decisions about funding programs, projects, etc. To give to the College, contact Rita Schroll in College Advancement, x5218.

Fireworks! Music! Eats! Once again, the College is hosting (and funding) a Fourth of July Celebration for the community. The community band strikes up at 8 p.m. next Tuesday, July 3 behind the PERC. Fireworks at 10 p.m., tended by local firefighters. Here's the story.

We’ll dedicate the College Union on Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 6. Plan to gather at 10 a.m. for the party. Planning also is under way for a community open house that Sunday, with tours. A similar open house for the community for the Science Center drew hundreds!

Faculty annual reports are due July 2 to the Dean’s Office.

News to know …

We  have two new honorary members of the Board of Trustees, both very familiar names: Bill Harper and Bentley Peters. These former members of the Board will serve in an ongoing advisory role, and hopefully, will join the Board as it meets on campus, to participate in discussions. (They will not vote.) By their service, Bill and Bentley made the College stronger, and undoubtedly will continue to strengthen the College, notes President Switzer. Two others continue to serve as honorary trustees: Gordon Keever and Edgar Butterbaugh.

Our “events and reminders” message is now history, defunct. Don’t forget to give the MEMO Lady a heads-up when planning events or for help spreading the news.

France, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico … these are the countries our students will study in this fall and for the full school year. Thanks to the advisors, mentors, coaches, residence hall directors and other faculty and staff who helped make this extraordinary opportunity a reality for Leslie Butterbaugh and Colleen Hamilton, who are headed to Strasbourg, France; Laura Dell, Anna Grady, Nicole Hammond, Adam Stokes, Jonathan Fagan and Jennifer Moore, who are headed to Quito, Ecuador; Melissa Webb, who is off to Barcelona, Spain; and Nick Kaufman, off to Xalapa, Mexico. Sixteen students, including two 2007 grads, have returned from their time abroad in Sapporo, Japan; Cheltenham, England; Athens, Greece, Barcelona, Spain; Galway, Ireland; and Quito, Ecuador.

The coffee pot is on in the Campus Store, filling in for The Oaks during the summer. Sippers will find decaf and full-test.

Remember to obtain a Purchase Order for anything that costs more than $1,000, including internal printing services. Quentin Moudy, in the basement of the Ad Building, is our source for purchase orders.

Hopefully, you received the latest Alumni and Friends e-newsletter from the College. If it got lost in your queue, click here for the link on our Alumni pages. If you do not think you are on the distribution list, click here to subscribe

Our new students can’t wait to get here! This is Dan Beedle of Demotte, who is going to major in athletic training and soon don a Spartan tennis shirt.

Tech stuff …

Do you still see this on your PC? You shouldn’t. If the icon shows up when you log on or appears on the bottom right corner of your screen, by your clock, contact Helpdesk at x5454 or click here, so ITS can update your PC to Microsoft Forefront Client Security, which replaces McAfee.

Our new voice mail system is up, but some are still encountering challenges, which our ITS team is chipping away. The old voice mail is gone. Access voice mail via the web using MCMail. We need a .wav file player like Windows Media Player or iTunes installed to play the voice mail attachment we receive in our e-mail (and speakers or headphones). We also need speakers or headphones. Access our web-based voice mail configuration system here. The name and password = our office PC logons. Click here for instructions for installing Outlook View Mail, to receive and listen to voice mail messages from Outlook. Close Outlook before installing. Or, ask the very capable Help Desk to do it (no need to contact Larry the Telephone Guy directly).

ITS needs our fax facts … Have you reported your office fax machine to the ITS Help Desk so its number is recorded in our new long distance system?

Notable …

Congratulations to Scott Stan, our women’s soccer coach and assistant professor of exercise and sport sciences, on earning a master of arts in education from the University of Phoenix.

The Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference is the oldest writers conference in America, founded by Robert Frost in the 1930s … and Jonathan Watson (English) has been accepted! Only one in five applicants is accepted, based on a submitted manuscript, for the Aug. 15-26 conference in Middlebury, Vt. Congratulations, Jonathan!

What books are on your nightstand? The MEMO Lady has a small stack of short story collections loaned and recommend by friends, James Chace’s 1912, and Evanovich trash. But what about you? Anything in your summer stack to recommend to Jo for her monthly message? What about a children’s book? Or a treasured read from the past? Send your recommendation (author, title, brief paragraph) to president@manchester.edu.

Oldies but still goodies from recent MEMOs ...

It’s my place, too! … is the place for prospective students, parents and other visitors to meet Manchester College faculty and staff. Like “my place@mc,” which introduces some of our current students, “my place too” is filled with a variety of testimonials that help tell the Manchester story. Please add your comments to “my place too.”  Just click on the “Add a new profile” link, answer the questions, and upload a photo if you have one.

No more long distance codes!!! On June 15, we made the switch. Now, we only dial 9 for an outside line, and 1 + Area Code + Phone Number when calling from campus offices. Campus telephone services will monitor LD calling for abnormal patterns. To make personal LD calls, we need to buy pre-paid or carrier calling cards from a store or the Campus Store. (Resicom also will end.)

MC employees injured on the job during summer should contact Dale Metzger, x5061, in the physical plant or Security, x5999, during the work week (7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. On weekends and after hours, notify Security and contact Dale on the next business day. After Aug. 1, the contact is our nurse, Tara Vogel.

Deep cleaning. Deep, deep cleaning … that’s what’s in store for our offices and windows this summer. Whole large crews of custodians will arrive equipped to swoop through our buildings on specified days. We need to prepare for them by removing items from the floor, desk and windowsills that would hamper their efforts to do the best, swiftest job possible. Here’s the remaining schedule:

Clark                            July 16-20         Window washing, floor waxin

Calvin Ulrey                   July 16-20         Window washing, floor waxing

       Administration               July 9-20           Deep cleaning

Administration               July 23-27         Window washing, floor waxing.
