Golf, we do that, with student-athletes. MC’s women’s golf program is ranked nationally by Golf Digest! Check out the September 2006 issue: The magazine ranks the College’s program 50th for “Academics First.” Especially important to the ranking is how MC ranks for its coaches/facilities – 77. No. 1 Princeton scored an 82, in comparison. Writes Golf Digest: “For juniors who are excellent students first, golfers second, these schools provide the absolute best education and an opportunity to play.”

It pays to pick up campus clutter … consider what happened when Lisa Gregory (alumni relations) picked up a scrap of paper in the visitors parking lot across from the Ad Building: Scribbled on the back of the paper was a handwritten note: Need to make $700 gift to MC. “I’m not sure if the person that dropped this note has an outstanding pledge they want reminded of or if this is just a new pledge! Too bad there was no name on the note,” bemoans Lisa. “I’d love to be able to call that person and remind them of their note since they have now lost that reminder!”

Our Athletic Training Education Program is reaccredited for another five years, reports the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education.  This means Manchester has completed a comprehensive review and demonstrated compliance with national standards, and that our graduating athletic training majors (we have 32 + 15 newcomers) are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification exam. Congratulations Mark Huntington, Brice Bedke, Erin Foreman (new!) and us!

The Welcome Reception is for all of us! Our new Welcome Reception format is a come-and-go affair … but we’ll want to catch the introduction of new staff at 5 p.m. Newbies since last September are welcome early, of course, but will want at least to be at the Science Center by 4:40 p.m. to don their nametags. The reception is 4 to 6 p.m. in the Physician’s Atrium. Some offices can’t close before 5 because of the press of business/students, but perhaps some folks (and the newbies) can slip away …

Welcome to MC! Penny J. Deal, Administrative Assistant, Office of Academic Affairs; Rick Hammer, Track and Field Intern; Anthony W. Feher, Adjunct Faculty, Exercise and Sport Sciences; Erin R. Foreman, Instructor, Exercise and Sport Sciences

Want to learn more about the College and its programs and opportunities? Join the Manchester Community Club, which gathers monthly for dinner and programs about the College by faculty, students, staff and alumni. There’s even interest groups in painting, theatre, sightseeing, etc. The first program of the year is Professor Emeritus Ken Brown of our Peace Studies program, at 6 p.m. on Sept. 6 in the Oakwood Hall great room. Annual dues are $10. Dinner is $9. Make reservations with Charles/Susie Klingler at 982-6470 or Jo Ann Schall at 982-6977 before Sept. 1.

These folks know where all the meaty bones are buried. As another year begins, we celebrate the service, friendship and talent of these nifty colleagues. We cheered them at the All-Staff Meeting last week:

40 years – Rita Schroll (College Advancement)

25 years – Betty Butterbaugh (Career Services, which also celebrated on her anniversary with a cake)

15 years – Jolane Rohr (Admissions) and Elbert Sammons (Physical Plant)

10 years – Sandy Bendsen (Admissions)

5 years – Adam Hohman (Admissions), Julie Talz (Residential Life), Nancie Meyer (Campus Store)

What do door prizes, College services and snacks have in common? The Info/Tech Fair! This is for us – all MC employees – to learn about all the services the College has to offer, from audio-visual, to printing, to ITS to PR to human resources, the library, fund development, learning support, conference services … you name it! Stop by Funderburg Library anytime to meet informally with folks in our MC network between 9 and 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22. One-stop shopping! And food.

Didja see the College’s entry in the Fun Fest window decorating contest? The theme was Mardi Gras – no stretch for designer Dan Chudzynski and PR intern Kelli Griewank! It’s still there, in the window of the Sports Café on Main Street. Grab a peek and an eat!

More great new web pages! Check out College Advancement’s new pages.

We have a new server for the College website and related sites. Our pals in ITS will keep the old one up for a couple of weeks. Expect possibly an interruption (couple of hours) on Friday, Aug. 18. More info is forthcoming. Do not make any structural or major design changes to our web pages during this time. Updating text is fine. Address questions to Rick Blevins.

Microsoft is warning of a bug in some Windows versions that could lead to enormous computing issues of the likes of the MS Blaster worm days in the early 2000s. This bug can spread lethally quick and cause irreparable damage to PC files. Patching is required. While ITS is taking care of our MC computers, home computers and student computers are vulnerable until patched. Here’s a link to the Microsoft security bulletins: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-Aug.mspx.

The Manchester Investment Club will hold its monthly meeting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16 in Funderburg Library. There will be no money to invest. The year per share value grew 5.6 percent as of June 30. Prospective faculty and staff members are welcome.  – Richard Harshbarger, Treasurer

Wow!     Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

Kudos to Deb Hustin (ITS) from the athletic training staff.  We had a critical software problem prior to football players reporting for testing, and Deb contacted tech support and fixed the problem in short order – with 10 minutes to spare before the football players arrived. Thanks, Deb!!! – Mark Huntington

Beverly Ferry, executive director of the Wabash County Council on Aging, recently was chatting about Manchester’s Lilly Endowment internship program with a Ford Meter Box executive who serves on her board. He told her he is “very impressed with the high quality of interns Manchester College produces,” reports Marcia Benjamin (communication studies). Both admire that our student interns (Audrey Hampshire and Leanne Rakestraw) from the Manchester Chamber and the Learn More Center presented so professionally at a recent Chamber “Before Hours” program. Cap feathers for MC, its interns, and program leader Liz Bushnell!

Human Resources

Faculty and Staff Openings: Assistant Director of The Manchester Fund, Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach, Assistant Wrestling Coach, Custodian, Campus Security Officer (part-time), Publications Assistant, Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach Intern

It really is easy, honest! It’s time for exempt employees to join the electronic recording – only for paid time off, etc. On Sept. 1, exempt employees will replace those white cards (which we lost anyway) with ezLabor and the help of our Alison Keating in ITS. Paid time off includes bereavement, holidays, jury duty, sick days and vacation. Training to come.

Not trained yet in ezLabor?  Supervisors of staff and/or students who have not trained in this electronic recording system, contact Allison Keating in ITS, x5432

Student employee supervisors: Because the pay period ends in the middle of the week, the last day of “summer employment” is Friday, August 25.  Students who continue to work until classes begin need to notify Carrie Makin (x5559) in HR and will be paid at the school year rate of $5.25 beginning Saturday, August 26. Supervisors with questions about summer housing credit for their student workers should contact Carrie. The credit will be applied by the end of September; the $200 bonus (or whatever amount due) will be paid Sept. 30.

It’s time to post student job openings! Fill in the Student Employment Request Form and e-mail it to Carrie Makin, who will post the openings on our website. Students now can apply online, so we’ll get their applications via email unless we pick up the hard copies at Human Resources. We also can just update past postings. Contact Carrie.

Oldies but still goodies from recent MEMOs …

Employee Assistance Program on campus. A representative from Bowen Center will be on campus from 11:30 p.m. to 1p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16,  in the Plowshares Library, Calvin Ulrey 206. The first five sessions are paid for by the College. This service is completely confidential.

Campus DirectoryIt only takes a moment … now that we have that song in the beans of the longtimers, please take that moment and visit the online Campus Directory to ensure everything about you is exactly correct … phone, job, campus address, etc. See … the link is right here; click on the phone. Do we need to change something? Absolute deadline is Aug. 31, to Crysta Borden in Human Resources, x5288.

40 cents … that’s our new mileage rate for all personal vehicles (regardless of type), effective July 1. It’s 42 cents for College-owned minivans and 52 cents for College-owned passenger vans.

To access the Group Administrators website (www.groupadministrators.com), enter your new ID number as your user ID and the last four digits of your Social Security number the first time you log on. You’ll then be prompted to change your password. (Those who already have changed their password will retain that password; only the user ID will change.)

Mark your calendars! for the all-staff meetings, intended to update us on College issues and to strengthen our sense of unity and commitment to the Mission. At these meetings, we’ll also recognize service, do a Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings will start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts of campus we rarely see.
