News to know

Coming to a desk near us: a new phone system! Our old system, is, well … old. Hopefully, by the time January Session starts we all will have new Voice over IP (VoIP) phones, the latest in technology, with express messaging, meet-me conferencing, instant changes when moving offices, improved E-911 and emergency services … and the return of internal and external greetings. ITS is working on the changeover now. In the meantime, we’ll endure the incorrect date and time on our current phone system.

We're a Best College, again! The latest rankings are out from U.S. News & World Report. Class sizes, student-faculty ratio and alumni giving are among the reasons for our move up in the rankings, to 14th in the Midwest. See our home page for the story. More rankings due this week.

Did you register for our welcome reception this Thursday, Aug. 23? We’ve lots of new faculty and staff – and a new school year – to welcome. Appetizers to nibble, music to enjoy: 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., in the College Union, upstairs. We’ll have a brief program at 5:30 p.m. Click here right now to register, and then return to read the rest of MEMO! Questions? Terri Jones in the President’s Office, x5050.

Got your button? Visit the Success Center upstairs in the College Union or the President’s Office for your own personal welcome button to greet our Class of 2011 as they arrive. Wear your nametag! Say hi! and grin widely the Manchester way. Walk a lost newbie to his or her destination; and maybe begin a friendship that will last four years or a lifetime!

Submit maintenance requests online! Just click here, and you’ll arrive at a page that requests your full e-mail address. The first time you click Submit, you will be prompted for your last name and other details.  Please, do not “test drive” the form unless you have a work request! Questions: Sue Lewis (maintenance), x5061.

The inaugural issue of the GOLD Club e-newsletter is on the web. The special newsletter for Graduates Of the Last Decade is filled with news about our youngest alumni.

Parents of current and prospective Manchester College students get Family Connections, an electronic newsletter to help them stay connected with the College. Here’s the link.

Transitions

Professor Ingrid Rogers (modern languages) will retire after the 2008 January Session. Ingrid began at Manchester in 1979 as an adjunct in the English department and has taught in many different fields in countless different locations. Notes Dean Sharfman: “There are few faculty members anywhere who can teach well in three languages, but Ingrid has managed to educate students with distinction in all three.” Ingrid also served at our BCA sites in Marburg, in Dalian, China, and has regularly taken students abroad. She is a leader on campus and in the state in service learning. “She brings a passion for students and for her subjects that is refreshing; we will miss her.” More about Ingrid.

Call them Professor! Promoted: Kim Duchane (exercise/sport sciences) and Steve Naragon (philosophy). Congratulations!

Volunteer Services and Indiana Reading Corps have moved to East Hall, into the west end of the basement of East Hall (HR offices five years ago). Faculty and staff with service learning components of their classes and teams will want to connect with Carole Miller-Patrick, coordinator of service opportunities, x5721.

Four faculty members take sabbaticals and leaves.

Mark Angelos (history) will spend his fall sabbatical studying business contracts in medieval Italy to learn about how women participated in the birth of Western capitalism during the 12th and 13th centuries.

Abby Fuller (sociology) is on leave.

Beate Gilliar (English) is on full-year sabbatical in Germany, seeking knowledge of journalistic writing, transforming on-site work into research and working on her second book, which may be titled The Future of the Flag.

Kendall Rogers (religion/philosophy) is taking his sabbatical January Session and Spring 2008 to build on his research the last two summers on recent developments in protestant systematic theology.

Zoey Rita Mordecai arrived at 7:53 a.m. on July 20, to Michael Brown (religion/philosophy) and Rachel Mordecai (English). Zoey already is a night person, and quite content with the world so far, reports Michael. Wonder if she, too, will join the MC faculty someday?

Go to job descriptions

New student wages. Responding to a well-research student campaign, the College will not take its permitted 15 percent discount, and will pay students the full new minimum wage, beginning with the fall 2007 semester. Here is the pay scale:

Beginning fall 2007 – $5.85 per hour

Beginning fall 2008 – $6.55

Beginning fall 2009 – $7.25

Summer scales will be announced later. Students worked almost 100,000 hours last year, so this raise is significant to the budget.

Summer student employment ends Aug. 28. Through the 28th, students will receive the summer rate of $6.50 per hour. Those who continue working will receive the new minimum wage of $5.85 beginning Aug. 29. Students need to work at least 380 hours May 21 through Aug. 28 to qualify for housing credit and pay bonus.

Yellow cards! All students continuing to work into the fall semester must complete yellow eligibility cards, which require supervisors’ signatures. Questions? Carrie Makin, x5559.

International student pay. International students can begin working on campus as soon as they are enrolled, but may not withdraw any of their pay from their MC account or receive paychecks until they have recorded their Social Security card with Human Resources. They may use their pay toward MC expenses.
