Didn’t look like hardly anyone missed that great Welcome Reception last evening in the Physician’s Atrium … awesome ordervie-type things (ordered for the good life, a joke, a joke). Piano talents courtesy of Deb DeWitt, the duet of Wilson and Mary Lutz, and Diane Scheerer. And Jill Biehl! Did you hear her! Bet we tap THAT crystal toe-tapping talent again! Thanks to all who helped at the doors and with nametags, too: Lisa Gregory, Adam Hohman, Mike Leckrone, Wendi Hutchinson, Julie Garber, Betty Butterbaugh … and she who brought us/it all together – Terri Jones.  And thanks to Chartwells for outstanding nibbles! “You’ve just got to try this!” echoed upstairs and down. (Our newcomers since last Sept. 1 gathered on the stairs to our applause.)

Travels with Jim and Thelma. Incredible photos of, well, international trips with Jim Adams and Thelma Rohrer … to Bolivia, Honduras, Portugal, Spain, Peru, Guatemala … in Link Gallery around Wine Recital Hall. You’ll want to pick up the notes that accompany the photos. ”I made the descriptions more detailed than is commonly done because I want viewers to be able to get involved with the pictures and to have a feeling for the cultures in which these pictures were taken,” notes photographer and fellow traveler Jim Streator (chemistry emeritus). Our students get to do this stuff! Way cool!

Some details for your dining pleasure. Those wooden stairs will take you right into the dining area. Conference Services and the mail room/mailboxes are tucked comfortably across the street, in Holl-Kintner. The Oaks is, uh, a big ol’ empty space temporarily. No Oaks, but retail eats are offered Sunday through Thursday, 7:30 to 11 p.m. in the upstairs café. More details to come about the late-night eats and specials. On Sundays, breakfast is 8 to 9 a.m. and brunch is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The café number is x5289. Here’s the rest of the schedule:

"On the Brink of A Good Year." That's the title of President Jo Young Switzer's address for our Opening Convocation at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30. This first convocation of the new year is filled with song, excitement, and lots of color: Our faculty gowns and enters (and leaves) in procession. Come together! The community is invited, too!

La Fiesta is coming our way on Saturday, Sept. 16. It’s hard to believe this is the third one already! We’re all invited to join the celebration of Mexico’s independence with the growing Mexican population in our area. AND, the party benefits English as a second language classes at the Learn More Center. Food, games, music! 5 to 8 p.m. at Manchester High School.

And … we can pitch in! Help is needed for both preparation and clean-up. To volunteer, call Faith Miller, 982-8182.

Welcome newcomers! Frederick G. Weiser (Spanish sabbatical replacement); Douglas M. Papenmeier, Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry; Amy K Spears, Development Officer, College Advancement

Have you met Jacquilline Nagila, our new director of multicultural services and campus diversity? Ask her about her former job in the safari business in her homeland Kenya! Well, she’s also spent a bunch of years in the banking industry back home, too. And then went way cold to Minnesota to school. After graduate work in the balmier temps of Bloomington, Ind., she’s joined us. Welcome! Almost all of our international newcomers have arrived, so she’s kinda busy right now, but smiles like she likes that! Welcome!

Tut, Tut … About that King Tut Chicago alumni tour coming up on Oct. 16. The bus leaves the museum at 6 p.m. Indiana time. There’s still room on the bus. Here’s the whole story, in case you missed it.

Speaking of Chicago, our alumni folks are offering a holiday shopping tour to downtown again, on Dec. 7. The $35 trip is open to all, with transfer opportunities between Water Tower Mall and Marshall Fields. Here’s the loop scoop.

We can access our e-mail from off-campus. Here’s the address: https://mcmail.manchester.edu  Internet Explorer works best; you’ll be prompted for your campus Windows logon. Questions:

ITS Help Desk at helpdesk@manchester.edu.

Food! Staff! Together as one! Mark your calendars for the SOC* Kickoff Luncheon at noon, Wednesday, Sept. 13 in Wampler Auditorium. Greet newbie staffers and get the goods on lots of new ways to earn our Wellness Holiday! (Oh, yah, and how to get/stay healthy.)

Designer heaven. Hopefully, when we travel to workshops and conferences, we return energized, tired, inspired …. Designer Dan Chudzynski spent a week this summer studying under world-famous graphic designer Milton Glaser. An all-nighter project, and others lasting to midnight made this workshop no vacation, for sure, but Dan is using words like “life-changing.”

We’re not puzzled that our Leonard Williams (political science) is in the thick of the Cinema Center’s screening of Wordplay on Sunday, Sept. 10. The film is about the super bowl of puzzlers, the American Crossword Tournament, which Leonard has attended. The Black and White Bash at the downtown Fort Wayne cinema includes an Oreo and ice cream reception with a drawing for an autographed book by puzzler Wil Shortz, the flick, and AFTERWARD: A Q&A with our puzzlemaster Leonard and others. Visit the Cinema Center website for directions. Dress in black and white, of course. Leonard’s puzzles get published in The New York Times, New York Sun, The Washington Post, assorted puzzle books, etc.

A video, Regret, about the choices students make about drinking, drugs, partying and driving comes very close to home – created in part by the families of the two college students who crashed as they were headed to Huntington in spring 2005. One died; the other (narrating the film) went to jail. Local legal officials will be present, and possibly, parents of the two, for a panel discussion; convo credit. It’s free, and the community is invited.

Thank you so much to the Manchester College faculty and staff for the savings bond for our new family member, Ayla. We really appreciate your thoughtfulness! Kambree is getting used to her new role as a "big sister," and we are realizing how blessed and busy we are with two children. Thanks again!

Did you remember to turn in your white cards to HR? Uh oh! Exempt staff had an Aug. 23 deadline to report paid time off. For the new year, we switch to ezLabor electronic reporting of our vacations, sick leave, etc. Contact Crysta Borden about the card.

Supervising student employees this semester? Read on! Students must pick up from HR and get your signature on that yellow Eligibility Card. This must happen, with supervisor/student signatures BEFORE the student can begin work. All student labor is recorded in ezLabor. Contact Allison Keating in ITS, x5432 if you don’t have a clue what ezLabor is all about. Carrie Makin, queen of student employees, says students are applying in droves using our on-line process. Don’t forget to tell her when you have filled vacancies.

Wow!     Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

Kudos to Tammie in Financial Aid. She has been amazing at helping me this year with everything. This has been a tough summer with getting all my info together and she has been helping me so much! I really appreciate all she has done!                          – Kathryn Hinga, Co-Editor Oak Leaves, Co-Editor Spectrum

Oldies but still goodies from recent MEMOs …

Got your button? See Sandy Bendsen (admissions) in ADM 115 for your own personal Welcome button to greet our Class of 2010 as they arrive. Some first-year student athletes already are on campus. Can you feel the energy yet? Wear your nametag! Say hi! Grin widely in that Manchester way. Walk a lost newbie to his or her destination; make a new friend!

Campus DirectoryIt only takes a moment … now that we have that song in the beans of the longtimers, please take that moment and visit the online Campus Directory to ensure everything about you is exactly correct … phone, job, campus address, etc. See … the link is right here; click on the phone. Do we need to change something? Absolute deadline is Aug. 31, to Crysta Borden in Human Resources, x5288.

40 cents … that’s our new mileage rate for all personal vehicles (regardless of type), effective July 1. It’s 42 cents for College-owned minivans and 52 cents for College-owned passenger vans.

Mark your calendars! for the all-staff meetings, intended to update us on College issues and to strengthen our sense of unity and commitment to the Mission. At these meetings, we’ll also recognize service, do a Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings will start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts of campus we rarely see.
