Transitions ...

The impact of Professor Jim Adams is everywhere at Manchester. We’ve lost count how many languages he can speak and read, or how many countries that have served as his classroom, or where all of his artwork is on campus. We do know he is a true believer of lifelong learning, of service learning, of the liberal arts. His students, young and not so young have experienced incredible opportunities. He helps define Manchester College. And for only one more year, he enables us to proclaim that we are home to the 2002 U.S. Professor of the Year. Jim retires next spring, but will remain as an adjunct, on the gallery committee, and undoubtedly as a tour guide. For more about Jim, click here, or click here and scroll to Page 19.

High-fives to Rick Espeset, Manchester’s new athletic director. Our nationwide search brought us right back to our own baseball diamond. Rick follows the footsteps of Tom Jarman, who retired Sept. 1. Read all about it here.

Welcome to Manchester College! Jacelle (Jaci) Stevens, Associate Director of Development; LaDonna R. Bloom, Student Accounts Specialist;

News to know ...

Emergency Mass Notification System. In an emergency, if appropriate, we have the ability to send a text message alert not only to our campus e-mail addresses, but to our cell phone text message e-mail account and personal e-mail account (if we have those services). Report those accounts here, right now, in MCConnect: https://mcconnect.manchester.edu  We will ONLY use these accounts for an emergency alert. Questions: Les Gahl (campus security), x5256

Class rosters are on MCConnect. Only adjunct faculty will receive hard copies. Please meet in your assigned rooms (which are not entered in VEMS). The Registrar’s Office cannot process room change requests until next week, after Aug. 31.

Life serves up tough problems. Our employee assistance program (EAP) is here to help us out, with confidential help at several counseling centers, and on campus four times a year. If you have not received a letter and Frequently Asked Questions about this free service, contact Human Resources. It’s a free, absolutely private employee benefit. Here’s a link to a FAQ, and here’s a link to the Bowen Center.

Bienvenidos, that 105-page community resource guide for area Hispanics, now is in distribution – researched, compiled, created and distributed by Professor Ingrid Rogers (modern languages) and senior Tim Polakowski. Here, they’re delivering copies to the Akron Community Relations Task Force.   →

VISTA is Microsoft’s new operating system that comes with all kinds of whiz-bangs and gadgets. Here’s a link to a 5.5-minute video, What’s new with the Windows desktop and Start menu? If you have a little more time, here’s a link to some demos of some of the options. Contact the ITS HelpDesk with questions, concerns, etc.

Notable ...

She’s already studying for her master’s in nursing, but here’s Tara Vogel, our director of Health Services, at her graduation last May at University of Saint Francis. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau international honor society of nursing.

"To Winchelsea," a poem by Jonathan Watson (English), appears in Crab Orchard Review, Vol. 12.1. Jonathan composed the poem during his Plowshares-sponsored travel to Sussex, England, in summer 2005.

Our Indiana Reading Corps is one of the finest and largest collegiate service learning programs in the state. Coordinator Carole Miller-Patrick will explain why to the national president of Campus Compact, and others at a conference Sept. 13 in Indianapolis. Congratulations on the opportunity and honor, Carole!

She’s got style, but we knew that! Terri Jones (president’s office) received first place in the separates category at the Indiana State Fair Fashion Show this month. She created and modeled a brown wool skirt with a brown tweed Italian wool vest and lined jacket. She’s a five-time champion at this annual competition, with four second-place trophies.

Do you fiddle? Do you know a fiddler who would be willing to perform during the Homecoming show? Contact Scott Strode (theatre), x5350

Looking for some light reading while lunching? Consider Expressions, the quarterly arts and cultural magazine of Arts United for northeast Indiana. Find it in the College Union, with our other freebie newspapers. Thanks to Thelma Rohrer (art) for arranging to receive this free magazine.

Summer student employment ends Aug. 28. All students continuing to work into the fall semester must return supervisor-signed yellow eligibility cards to Carrie Makin, x5559 in Human Resources.

Wow!   Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

A big thanks to the many groups of individuals who made Opening Day for new students go so smoothly: Residential Life staff, Health Services and student health assistants, Safety and Security staff and student cadets, athletic teams and coaches, Chartwells staff, Shanon Green (student activities) and Student Orientation Leaders (SOLs). There are “reports on the street” that this has been the smoothest opening ever! Even the sun cooperated to make it a great day. We were a unified team in collaborating and working together to make our new students and parents feel so welcomed!

I called the ITS Helpdesk at 9 a.m. Friday morning, requesting software be installed on a classroom computer before a 9:30 meeting. Deb Hustin came to my rescue and got the software installed just in time. Thank you, Deb! Thanks also to all of our hard-working ITS staff – we (faculty/staff/students) are demanding groups and I’m always amazed at the service ITS is able to provide.” Melissa Grinstead (College advancement)

Setting the scene: It’s the weekend, and telephone guru Larry Gyrion is about to go on paternity leave … and ITS receives an alert: None of the phones on Garver Men’s 2 have dial tones. Larry (once again) to the rescue, Saturday or not! Notes ITS Director Michael Case: “Larry is a credit to my team and to the College.”
