Transitions ...

Backus-Naur form, B-trees, loops, linkage, UNIX, algorithms … there’s a whole ’nother language out there, and scores of MC grads speak it, thanks to the teachings of Chuck Stanton, associate professor. Chuck will retire next spring, ending 15 years of balancing the difficult task of teaching both computer science and mathematics. Widely published on a number of subjects and with national and international presentations under his belt, Chuck “has been an excellent teacher,” praises Dean Sharfman.

News to know ...

Big doin’s at ITS over the summer Here’s what we got, or what’s coming soon:

·                       Emergency mass alert system

·                HelpDesk now is in Clark G108, with a counter.

·                      Communication Building lab is in Clark G102.

·                       All computer labs are running Vista and Office 2007

·                       New wireless configuration replaces Odyssey client. Click for instructions.

·                       No more Resicom for long distance service. Students need a calling card.

Coming soon:

·                       New e-mail system with nearly 2 Gb of storage

·                       New voice-over-IP (VoIP) phone system for employees

Here’s a solution for those on Vista who can’t save Office 2007 documents to the network. While ITS works feverishly on this problem, faculty and staff (alas, not students) can save the document first to their desktop, then move it to a network shared drive.

Juggling. Smoothie making. Fly fishing. January in Jamaica. Aromatherapy. Healthy snacks. Our profs are experts on lots more than their fields of study! Do a Res Life presentation, and build bridges between the classroom and campus life. To volunteer a presentation, contact Allen Machielson (student development), x5052.

All contracts involving the College and any outside vendor or business must be reviewed and approved by Jack Gochenaur, treasurer, before being signed. As you plan your project timetable, please allow two business days for the review.

Those with furniture and household items to share with new student Abdi Aziz Moburuk of Somalia and his wife and child should contact Jacquilline Nagila (multicultural services), x5276. They particularly need a dining table and chairs, couch(s), a queen bed and pots.

Help Manchester retain its incredible Fulbright record: Encourage an incredible student to apply. We have 22 Fulbrights because our faculty does just that. MC’s campus deadline is Oct. 1 for identifying seniors for the current program. Know an underclass student who might have the right stuff? Notify Professor Ken Rogers about him/her, too.

Recycle cans, support the campus community. Part of the funds used to finance SOC activities like the Care Fund, Picnic, Spruce Up Days, etc., comes from recycled pop cans. Pitch in!

Mark that calendar ...

Singer, guitarist, songwriter James Hersch is bringing his musical outreach lessons to North Manchester community in a weeklong residency beginning Monday, Sept. 17. Here’s the story. The workshops and myriad community presentations offer lots of learning opportunities for students, too! Contact Debra Lynn (music), x5296.

Building on campus interest last fall in Regret, the presentation about college drinking (and driving), Manchester will present a follow-up program,  Moving Forward with Regret… What Will Be Your Legacy? At 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 24. This VIA-credit video and dialogue encourages students to move forward from mistakes, build on their strengths, and invest in themselves to create the legacy they want at MC and for their lives. Questions: contact Danette Norman Till (counseling services), x5306.

SOC luncheons typically are the second Wednesday of the month, starting in October. We meet at noon (place varies) and are done by 1 p.m. The first gathering of the new school year:

It’s tough to mark our calendars if we don’t know about the events! Include PR  and the MEMO Lady in your notices about seminars, colloquiums, special lectures, programs. She’ll get them on the web calendar and help get the word out! Contact Jeri Kornegay (public relations), or the MEMO Lady.

In July, she presented (in Spanish) at the Latin American Jewish Studies conference in Argentina: “A Garden of Literary Delights: Nepantla and Retropsection in the Works of Angelina Muņiz-Huberman.”

MC's job guarantee to its grads gained national attention, thanks to an interview with Liz Bushnell (career services) in the Aug. 30 issue of the online newsletter of the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Wow!   Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

“I just wanted to express our sincere thanks to the organizers of the move in for first-year students. It was amazing how fast we were able to get everything to my children's rooms. With two first-year students moving in to the third floor of two different residence halls, we were very concerned that it would be difficult – and exhausting – to get it all done. Instead, it was easy. As soon as we emptied the vehicles, a multitude of coaches, players and others carried stuff to the rooms. It was very welcoming and set a tone of acceptance from the start. – Korrine Gust (education)

Oldies but goodies from recent MEMOs

Emergency Mass Notification System. In an emergency, if appropriate, we have the ability to send a text message alert not only to our campus e-mail addresses, but to our cell phone text message e-mail account and personal e-mail account (if we have those services). Report those accounts here, right now, in MCConnect.  We will ONLY use these accounts for an emergency alert. Questions: Les Gahl (campus security), x5256

VISTA is Microsoft’s new operating system that comes with all kinds of whiz-bangs and gadgets. Here’s a link to a 5.5-minute video, What’s new with the Windows desktop and Start menu? If you have a little more time, here’s a link to some demos of some of the options. Contact the ITS HelpDesk with questions, concerns, etc.
