MC rocks on and on with U.S. News & World Report! Students seeking a comprehensive undergraduate degree in Indiana will get the best value at Manchester College, reports U.S. News & World Report, which ranks us third among 107 Midwest comprehensive colleges. We also climbed the ranks as a “Best College.” Help spread the news! Read all about it on our home page.

Campus Pastor Jim Chinworth ends more than eight years of service to MC in January, when he steps into a new role as associate pastor for youth ministry and congregational life of the Manchester Church of the Brethren. We rejoice in his new calling and we miss him already! Click here to read all about it. The good news: Jim and Deb will remain in our community, continuing the strong ties MC has with the congregation and townsfolk. A search committee will seek a new campus pastor. The job is posted.

Live from Manchester College! MC grad Jeannette Rinard and co-host Dirk Rowley will broadcast their Majic in the Morning radio show from our café in the College Union this Friday morning, from 5:30 to 10 a.m. Honest! We’ve got students and faculty stopping by, and maybe even a little wake-up music. Stop by and gawk and grin. They’ll be just inside the door, to the right. After her gig, Jeannette is speaking to one of Corrine Gust’s education classes. Tune in to WAJI at 95.1 fm.

The best seat in the house is yours, or mine, or hers … faculty and staff are encouraged to sit wherever they want at convocation because students no longer have seat assignments! Yup, after all these years, we don’t need seating assignments to take attendance at those required convos. The card swipe system is working great. So move on up!

Welcome to the MC community! Paul M. Shump, Track Intern; Dale Larry Dockter, Music Adjunct; Melinda K. Sweeten, Koinonia Education Specialist (part-time); Rachel L. Mordecai, English Adjunct Faculty; Stephen P. McCall, Publications Assistant (part-time); Carol M. Streator, Instructor of Music

Opening Chapel is today at 10:  “What’s your story?” or, “What story is yours?” Please come and be intentional about welcoming first-year students.

The SOC* Luncheon Series begins anew at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 13 in Wampler Auditorium. We’ll start with info about our wellness holiday and meet new co-workers. Bring your lunch! Bring your co-workers. Reservations will ensure we have another seating: Contact Allison Keating, x5432.

How do we get 900 pounds of clay to the elevator-less third floor of Winger for art classes? In the past, football players, art students, teacher Thelma, Dave’s crew … any handy hand and back … hauled up the steps. And then came the cherry picker light bulb. Perfectly negotiated, trees and windows still intact.

Published! An article by Professor John Planer (music), "The Processes and Politics of Engaging Cantors in Alsace: 1818-1871" appears in the fall 2006 issue of The Journal of Synagogue Music.

Now here’s a painful goodbye wave: Scott Strode is looking for drivers to take his January Session class in Intercultural Theatre to Chicago O’Hare, and to pick them up. They leave campus at 9 a.m. on Jan. 6 and return to O’Hare at 7 p.m. on Jan. 22. Oh, yah, here’s the painful part … they’re going to New Zealand and we’re not going along! Contact Scott Strode, x5350.

Spartan Day has moved … to Tuesday, Sept. 19 to accommodate a high school group that wants to visit that day. The day for high school students and their parents to check out Manchester College and grab a free lunch on campus originally was set for Sept. 18. Don’t forget to wear your black-and-gold duds on Spartan Day. Invite a student to visit! For reservations: 800-852-3648 or visit@manchester.edu

Check out the 2006-07 MC Source online at http://www.manchester.edu/images/mcsource.pdf

MC Source is the official manual of Manchester College services, policies, and procedures. It’s got all  kinds of stuff about  few examples: scademics, student services, residential life, community living, alcohol and other drugs, student conduct review system, clubs and organizations …

The Manchester Investment Club will have its first monthly meeting of the school year at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 20 in the College Union. There will be money to spend. Prospective faculty and staff members are welcome. We can learn the fundamentals of investing with limited funds and the TIAA-CREF investing process. Contact Rita Schroll (college advancement) for more information, x5218.

Wow!     Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

To Brad Nadborne and Eric Dougal: "We here at the North Manchester Chamber of Commerce and the FunFest Committee would like to extend our gratitude for the way that Manchester College’s men’s basketball coaches and players stepped up and did us a huge favor by taking over the 3-on-3 Basketball tournament. You don’t realize what a devastation this would have been for FunFest if this event was not to happen. Many people would have been very disappointed with not only the Chamber of Commerce but with North Manchester in its entirety. The way Eric threw himself into this event cannot be commended enough!"

From a parent: "Manchester is impressive! Got there yesterday to move (our daughter) in and to our surprise the football team was waiting to help carry stuff in. The money was in her account already, big surprise. I’ve graduated from Vincennes University once and Indiana State University twice and neither school even comes close to Manchester."

What An Impressive Opening Day! I was so impressed by the smoothness of how everything was orchestrated. Many of you spent hours and hours “frontloading” the system so it would make it look easy! I know it was not easy but required hours of hard work and commitment. Thanks so much from the bottom of my heart to all of our Residential Life staff members, Safety and Security, Health Services, orientation staff and SOL leaders, the Student Development main office, and others who made Opening Day go so well!  We are blessed to have you on the team!                                                                             – Beth Sweitzer-Riley, vice president for student development

Next week, the MEMO Lady is vacating in da U.P. She will record her vacation in EzLabor. How’s that for a reminder that all exempt employees must record all vacations, sick days, wellness days, floating holidays … all absences … in EzLabor. FACULTY will let Kim Meyer (academic affairs administrative secretary) know whether they want to use a sick day for their absence when they call in (x5051). Kim will make the EzLabor entry for faculty ’cause she’s so nice. Confused about EzLabor? Allison Keating.

Human Resources is a happenin’ place, with many students stopping by to pick up yellow cards or to complete paperwork for their first on campus job. Help publicize the new on-line service by directing students to the HR web pages. Just click on “Employment Opportunities” on the Home Page. Student jobs no longer are posted on the walls – they’re all on the web – and students must apply on-line.

Oldies but still goodies from recent MEMOs …

La Fiesta is coming our way on Saturday, Sept. 16. It’s hard to believe this is the third one already! We’re all invited to join the celebration of Mexico’s independence with the growing Mexican population in our area. AND, the party benefits English as a second language classes at the Learn More Center. Food, games, music! 5 to 8 p.m. at Manchester High School. And … we can pitch in! Help is needed for both preparation and clean-up. To volunteer, call Faith Miller, 982-8182.

40 cents … that’s our new mileage rate for all personal vehicles (regardless of type), effective July 1. It’s 42 cents for College-owned minivans and 52 cents for College-owned passenger vans.

Mark your calendars! for the all-staff meetings, intended to update us on College issues and to strengthen our sense of unity and commitment to the Mission. At these meetings, we’ll also recognize service, do a Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings will start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts of campus we rarely see.

Thursday, October 19
