The
updated online campus directory is posted,
with phone numbers and addresses for MC students, faculty and
staff. This
Campus Directory link also gives us information about
faculty emeriti, office numbers, and college personnel by
office. The Campus Directory is accessible only by MC login (mc\mlady)
and password. (It prefers Internet Explorer.)
We all have a stake in student success at MC …
and now we are bringing many of those support services together
in a new Success Center! This is an evolving concept right now,
as the directors and staff of our various support systems – from
The Writing Center to Health and Counseling Services to Learning
Support Services, Career Services, and more – pull together this
pro-active program focused on retention and success. Stuart
Jones will lead the team as executive director. Once the College
Union is complete, many of the parts will come together under
the Calvin Ulrey roof.
What's the topic ... of that
seminar, meeting,
etc., etc. and
so forth ... Please keep the
MEMO Lady
informed of calendar items so she can get them posted quickly on
the web Campus Calendar so the rest of the campus, world,
community knows! Send her your entire schedule, or just the
event.
Go to lunch at
lunchtime Thursday …
’cause the Internet will be down while our ITS folks complete work on our new firewall. The
upgrade will interrupt all on-campus access to the Internet. It
will not affect local resources, such as Blackboard or e-mail.
Hopefully, it will not last longer than 15 minutes.
Help send our choir (and alumni) to Carnegie Hall. Dunk a prof, with love and respect, of course. Bring the
kids, bring your throwing muscles, bring your humor to Carnival
for Carnegie, from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday on the infield of the
track. Our students have much money to raise to afford this
opportunity to perform in one of the greatest venues in the
world on May 26.
Emergency response and preparedness leaders from all over the
region
are invited to participate in a Best Practices blueprint for the
National Council on Readiness and Preparedness on the MC campus
on Monday, Oct. 16. Former Virginia Gov. James Gilmore will lead
the 3 to 5 p.m. session as he gathers feedback for NCORP. (He’s
president of the organization.) The meeting focuses on readiness
in the first 72 hours following terrorism or a natural disaster
such as Hurricane Katrina. Gilmore is also our convocation and
FYC speaker that day. Brad Pyrah (accounting), VIA chair, led the effort to
pull all of this together, which will bring lots of newcomers to
the MC campus, help the nation build its readiness blueprint, and
give our students lots to talk about!
Yet
more out-of-this-world news from Christer Watson. Our NASA space telescope researcher reports MC has received
a $22,096 grant from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the
California Institute of Technology for Christer to work on
publications with students, augmenting his
work with GLIMSPE. He
also has received two October viewings on the
Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world.
We know Who’s Who at Manchester College …
The new, 10th edition of Who’s Who Among American
Teachers honors eight members of our faculty, all nominated
by students who have appeared in the various Who’s Who
publications for students. This annual recognition of
educational excellence now includes more than 156,000 names in
six volumes! Congratulations to: Mark Angelos (history), Jim
Adams (art), Mary Lahman (communication studies), Janina Traxler
(French), Dagny Boebel (English), Greg Clark (physics), Heather
Schilling (education) and Scott Strode (communication studies).
Congratulations to Jeff Kock, our new leader of Conference Services, who replaces Stuart
Jones.
But the Mailroom is not moving, yet.
In anticipation of merging our campus mail system with
the College Store when the College Union is ready for occupancy,
our Mail Lady, Carolyn Rohrer, joins the College Store team now.
(For now, the Mailroom is in Holl-Kintner.)
Monday convocation is
award-winning journalist
Frank Sesno, CNN vice-president and Washington Bureau Chief.
He'll host a video, The Balancing Act, about the
difficult task of balancing civil liberties and national
security.

Hear what an expert on independent higher education has to say
at The Harry H. Henney ’35 Lecture on Thursday,
Oct. 19 in Wine Recital Hall. Our guest speaker is Richard Ekman,
president of the Council of Independent Colleges. His topic:
Independent Higher Education and America’s Future. Dr. Ekman
also has held leadership positions at the National Endowment for
the Humanities and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The lecture
begins at 5 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. reception in Link
Gallery.
Need a phone number, quick?
Those nifty 11x17 sheets of faculty/staff phone numbers are
available in AD9, compliments of Publications and Design.
Building
Bridges that Bring Us Closer!
That’s what
we’ll learn about at a
Celebrating Diversity Workshop this fall. We can pick
among two Sunday afternoons: Oct. 8 or Nov. 12. The workshops
run noon to 5:30 p.m., with registration at 11:45 a.m., in
Holl-Kintner 113. We will learn to build skills upon skills in a
positive environment, discussing stereotyping, prejudice,
mistreatment of all groups. $2 fee for refreshments and
materials. Application forms are in A320, Gary Zimmerman’s
office. Gary and Barb Burdge are co-organizing this workshop for
students, faculty and staff.

Help! Did anybody tape the TV broadcasts about Ralph Nader
on campus Monday night? We got lots of
media attention, including Channels 15 and 21 out of Fort Wayne.
If you have tape, or know somebody who does, please contact the
MEMO Lady, x5285.
Did you know MC
has an organic garden?
Can’t you just
taste those herbs? Well, yes, actually, we can! This Friday,
students will sell 1-cup packages of pesto that they create
tonight with Olivia Mendez in Chartwells. The sale is scheduled
for 10 a.m., just outside Flory
Auditorium in the Science Center. Sarah Reed and John Dutrow
planted the organic garden last spring. Students are harvesting
some of the basil this week, reports sophomore
Colleen Hamilton. Proceeds from pesto sales will pay for
seeds for the next spring planting.
Spread the
word that MC students
can get a free meal the first Sunday of each month, at 5
p.m. in the fellowship hall of North Manchester
Congregational Christian Church at 4th and Walnut. Rides
available by calling 982-2882. Questions? Call Robin Messer
at 982-2032.

Have
you seen this plaque in Muir Peace Garden?
It’s a beautiful time for a stroll through the garden at Wayne
and College to check out this new addition honoring Gladdys
Muir. A commissioning ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on
Homecoming Saturday. Thanks to Elden and Kathy Stoops and the
Peace Studies Institute.
Oct. 2 is Buck Night at Koinonia. O.K., that’s not what you think. Buck like in $1. That’s all
it takes to spend a great fall evening exploring one of the gems
of Manchester College. Hike trails, explore facilities packed
full with exhibits and critters, bounce on a bunk, toast hot
dogs, ogle the rocks, gaze out over the waving prairie grass …
and, especially, learn what it is to be a Friend of Koinonia.
Learn how you can give your time, talent, and financially to
benefit our programming for area school children.

Mark your
calendars! for the all-staff meetings, intended to update us on College issues
and to strengthen our sense of unity and commitment to the
Mission. At these meetings, we’ll also recognize service, do a
Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not
necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings will
start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour
beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts
of campus we rarely see.
