“What does Parking Only By Permit mean?” Find out the answers to that and other employee parking questions, at Parking FAQ, compiled by security officer, Harold Napier, on the Safety and Security web pages. Thanks Harold!

The online Campus Directory is updated. Check it for connections to Manchester College students, faculty and staff. The directory is accessible only by MC login and password and works best with Internet Explorer. Enter your user name thus: mc\jadoe. Here’s the link. The directory also includes: phone numbers for offices, departments and residence halls; and College personnel by office and emeriti faculty phone numbers

MC Source is now available online! This official student manual of Manchester College services, policies, and procedures has all kinds of fascinating, and important “stuff,” from rules, to committees, student rights and conduct systems. Here’s the link.

Is that e-mail bogus? The one posing as from ADP (our payroll vendor) is. Do not open any attachments, or even the e-mail: It’s trying to steal our identities or infect our computers. Click here for more.

Servers down all day Friday, Oct. 19. Catch up on filing, move work to your desktop. It is fall break, so that will help. No Colleague, e-mail, internet or departmental network drives on Oct. 19 as ITS does major work on our network and upgrades our voicemail software.

Don’t forget the Success Center party tonight! The open house is 6 to 8 p.m., with lots of prizes all evening. With a “Picture Your Success” theme, there are prizes for the best outfit mimicking a movie character.

Let’s unite at 10 a.m. this Saturday to dedicate the College Union! The party begins in Haist Commons, with tours before and after, music from the balcony and brief comments.

Welcome to Homecoming 2007. Here’s the story. Or, click here for the schedule. Questions? Contact the Alumni Office at x5223,, where folks are preparing hundreds of those little oak leaf name tags, taking reservations, decorating areas, registering alumni for events, and retaining their smiles.

Meet Your New Co-Workers at the SOC Luncheon, noon Wednesday, Oct. 10 in Wampler Auditorium. Bring your lunch (lunch provided for newbies). We need to let Betty Butterbaugh, x5242, know we’re attending to ensure seating for all. Do it now!

You’ll want to catch this lecture on solar energy by our extraordinary grad, Dr. Sarah R. Kurtz ’79, who received the prestigious international 2007 Dan David Prize. The 2007 Harry H. Henney ’35 Lecture begins at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25 in Flory Auditorium. A reception follows.

Add Nov. 30 to the faculty business meeting schedule. All begin at 10 a.m. in Flory Auditorium.

Notable

Stan Gilbert ’66 savored each day, and we shall miss our alumnus and board member. Stan, 62, died Sept. 20, of complications following a heart attack. He began his service as a representative of the Church of the Brethren on our Board of Trustees in 2002 and served on the academic affairs, nominating, trustee affairs and student development committees. He was an attorney adviser for the Office of Hearings and Appeals of the U.S. Social Security Administration in Peoria.

← Gallery G in the College Union magnificently displays the artwork of Phil Joseph, a member of our Board of Trustees. Visit our home page for  more about the gallery, and Phil, or click here.

Faculty quoted. Frank Olive (accounting/business) is quoted in the September issue of Financial Executive. Olive, college liaison for the Fort Wayne chapter of Financial Executives International, tells of inviting FEI members to speak to business students and of intern and shadowing opportunities as ways to acquaint students with the organization.

About 60 members of the Indiana section of the Mathematical Association of America will convene in our Science Center on Saturday, Oct. 27. This group of post-secondary educators puts heavy emphasis on teaching. Featured speaker is prominent mathematician John Swallow of Davidson College (N.C.), whose research concerns patterns that appear when considering the roots of polynomials with integer coefficients. Want to know more? Talk to Andy Rich (mathematics), x5313.

Welcome to the MC family! Jessilyn Lorraine McKee joined us on Sept. 22, reports dad Mark McKee (physical plant/maintenance). Mom Nicole and their blessing are doing great. Vitals: 7 pounds, 8 ounces, 20 inches tall.  →

For those who remember how to use it, an IBM Wheelwriter is available for the taking in Athletics and Exercise and Sport Sciences. Supplies are still available for this typewriter, notes Tami Hoagland, who is anxious for the space it takes up.

A huge thank you to all who assisted our new student from Somalia secure furniture and other necessities for his family in North Manchester. He has received all the items he needed and he is in good shape. – Jackie Nagila (multicultural services)

Journal of Religion, Conflict, and Peace. It’s a new on-line journal, funded by Plowshares. Here’s the story. Or, go directly to the Journal.

Science Center wins another design award. InterDesign, our architects for the structure, will receive a plaque Oct. 13 from the American Institute of Architects Indiana/Kentucky chapter.

Human Resources

Faculty and staff openings: Campus Security Officer, Assistant Professors of Accounting and Business (2), Admissions Counselor

Go to job descriptions

How’s our service? Snitch on a co-worker who is going the extra mile with customer service. HR is calling the event “Caught in the Act,” recognizing National Customer Service Week. The sightings should be fairly recent, and we cannot nominate ourselves. Here’s a link to the nominating form. Deadline is 5 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 5 to Human Resources. Campus Store gift certificates go to the employee caught in the act ($50) and the nominator ($25).

Reminder: Human Resources has a temp pool of students who are available to help offices and departments with their one-time or sporadic needs for additional student help. HR prefers 24- to 48-hours of notice, but may be able to accommodate last-minute requests. The temp pool includes clerical and crew members, and (new) a web designer to help update/maintain department pages, for example. Contact Carrie Makin in HR, x5559.

Taking a moment to ensure your student employees are recording their labor on the days they are working prevents headaches and frustrations all up and down the labor recording flagpole, and last-minute surprises.
