Dr. Dagny Boebel … Our leader in showing the importance of writing to all students is retiring after January Session. Dagny joined the MC faculty in 1986, leading the way for our English Department, Gender Studies, and theatre. Shakespeare will never be the same at Manchester College. What’s next? That farm in Wisconsin is calling, as well as theatrical and literary commitments in Mississippi.

As we embark on a new marketing campaign, a number of our students are stepping up as marketing ambassadors … by letting us photograph them and quote them. Our first photo session is today, Friday, in the Physician’s Atrium of the Science Center. If you happen by, please thank those good-natured students who are smiling for the cameras. We asked them to complete the sentence: At Manchester College, I found …. Wait until you see their responses. Yup, ya gotta wait just a little bit! It’ll make you weep! It’ll make you cheer!

Do you know what this means?

Please take a moment to read

your faculty or staff letter from

Tim McElwee or me. Thanks!

Our Jim Garber, dad to our Julie and Chris, is in Parkview Hospital’s coronary unit in Fort Wayne following a collapse on Wednesday. “He’s responding well,” squeezing hands, reports Chris. Jim’s in Room 1205-1; the family is camped down the hall in the lounge.

Today (Friday) is Phonebook Day!!!!! Each office will receive enough books for everyone in the office. Pitch old phone books in our recycling bins so the Phonebook People can make next year’s book with them.

Our Holiday Celebration (formerly Holiday Dinner) treat from our generous Board of Trustees for all MC employees is Saturday, Dec. 16 … in various venues, such as Petersime, Link Gallery. Hmmmm! Food everywhere! Well, maybe not. Details to come! Mark your calendars!

Books! Scores of 'em … from physics and astronomy books from Dwight Beery to career guides, to those good ol’ fiction paperbacks, to a smattering of books on history, religion, literature, etc. 50-cent hardbacks, 25-cent paperbacks.

Book Sale at Funderburg Library!

Thursday & Friday, Oct. 12-13

Last weekend, somebody broke into our Campus Post Office. If you suspect your mail has been tampered with or you have not received mail you expected, contact Security Director Les Gahl at llgahl@manchester.edu.

Welcome to the MC community!  Matthew N. Burlingame, Wrestling Intern; Jennifer M. Perusek, Assistant Director of The Manchester Fund; Timothy A. Van Cleave, Music Adjunct; Meghann F. Savard, Women’s Assistant Basketball Coach; Edward D. Burkhalter, Education Adjunct

SGA Open Forum. Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the next Student Government Association meeting, which will address the status of SGA and elicit feedback on how to improve the organization.  10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13 in Holl-Kintner 113. Shannon Green (student activities) is the contact, x5029.

Posters, everywhere … wait, that one’s on top of MY poster! “It’s poster-war time and they are sabotaging each other with scotch tape when there is probably enough room for each department’s announcements if arranged properly,” notes Sandy Bendsen (admissions) about the glass-covered bulletin board at the north entrance to the Ad Building. Please remind us, students and others that we need to take our posters to Sandy for posting on that board.

Let the sun shine in! Check out the stained glass in Petersime Chapel at the next SOC* Luncheon, next Wednesday, Oct. 11. We’ll start in the Oakwood great room and then Pastor Jim will lead the way. Noon, bring your lunch. To ensure ample seating, please give Allison Keating a heads-up RSVP, x5432.

KUDOS … to those who remember that we have an e-mail address called Kudos for us to give a tip of the hat to those who go the extra mile.

Where to find her … Jenny Perusek has joined us as assistant director of The Manchester Fund, in the Office of College Advancement., x5436. Her MC Box is OCA.

It’s almost All-Staff Meeting time again! We gather at 7:30 a.m. for goodies, 8 a.m. for the meeting in Wine Recital Hall, on Thursday, Oct. 19. Come cheer the three staffers we’ll honor for service.

Can’t dial long distance? That’s probably because you’ve forgotten we have access codes to do that. We have different dials for different distances. Use this Quick Telephone Reference Guide, for long distance, local calls, international, etc. (http://its/systems//Phones/quick_ref_guide.aspx) Those who do not have an access code, and need one for College work, contact the Helpdesk (x5454). Meanwhile, here are some tips from the guide from Telephone Larry:

To dial a long distance number:

*       Enter your access code.

*       Enter 9 for an outside line.

*       Enter 1 + Area Code + The 7-Digit Number

Wow!     Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

Kudos to Matt Davenport, Lindsey Weld, Bill Potter, Nick Marinello and Ryan Phillips and their student leadership teams!  Terri and I were impressed with the hall decorating for Homecoming. It was really a privilege for us to get to experience this first-hand and see the incredible effort that went into each hall. We had such a blast because of you and your students!!!  Each and every hall was so impressive and the spirit of the students was outstanding! The amount of time, work, creativity and thought that went into your efforts just blew us away. Judging the halls was NOT easy. If it had been up to us, there would have been a five-way tie for the winner of hall decorating this year. – Stuart and Terri Jones

A HUGE thank you to all MC staff who go beyond the call of duty each and every year and especially this year to make this joint Homecoming/Family Weekend a great success!! To Maintenance and Grounds Crew for their consistent work to cover all the details and keep our grounds and buildings looking great and especially Dave Friermood and his staff for working all hours to set up, tear down and re-set once again, to Sage and Matt, who make sure we have great audio, to Conference Services for all the logistic planning, to Chartwells for quality food and service, to the Student Education Association for their great activities for children, to Student Alumni Council students who helped meet and greet our alumni, to Shanon Green and the Student Activities staff for providing great family weekend planning, to our Athletic Department for our games that keep our alumni and families involved, to the Campus Store, to the entire College Advancement staff and student assistants who help in so many ways to welcome our alumni, to all those who presented a class (Tara Vogel, Stuart Jones and Mark Angelos), to Jeri Kornegay and her staff for providing PR and taking great photos, to our dedicated Printing Services staff for squeezing in yet one more print job, to Debra Lynn and Suzanne Gindin and their students who work with our alumni to present a fabulous concert and a big thank you to our leader Jo for making everyone feel so welcome at MC. A special thank you to Deb Stoltzfus, alumni secretary, for keeping us organized.                              – Gary and Lisa (Alumni Office)

Oldies but still goodies from recent MEMOs

The updated online campus directory is posted, with phone numbers and addresses for MC students, faculty and staff. This Campus Directory link also gives us information about faculty emeriti, office numbers, and college personnel by office. The Campus Directory is accessible only by MC login (mc\mlady) and password. (It prefers Internet Explorer.)

What's the topic ... of that seminar, meeting, etc., etc. and so forth ... Please keep the MEMO Lady informed of calendar items so she can get them posted quickly on the web Campus Calendar so the rest of the campus, world, community knows! Send her your entire schedule, or just the event.

Please! Update the events and schedules on your web pages! There’s tons of old information, sending an unfortunate message to would-be students, alumni and supporters eager to learn about the exciting things Manchester College is doing this year. Questions? Contact Webmaster Dan.

Mark your calendars! for the all-staff meetings, intended to update us on College issues and to strengthen our sense of unity and commitment to the Mission. At these meetings, we’ll also recognize service, do a Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings will start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts of campus we rarely see.
