News to know ...

Those coveted MC telephone directory sheets are hot off the press in AD9 (table in mail area) in the garden level of the Ad Building. Stop by and pick one up at no charge, compliments of the Office of Publications and Design

Sign up now for emergency alerts … please! In a crisis, we need to touch bases with every single one of us … those who have not registered their cell phone numbers and e-mail (text message) addresses for instant alert, please do so now. MC will use mass-notification only for emergencies, such as serious violence or natural disaster. If your wireless is Centennial, for example, your e-mail address is your 10-digit phone number@cwemail.com such as 2601234567@cwemail.com. For details about providers, click here.

We’ve bee hives on top of the Science Center, too! Last week we told you about the weather station “up there,” here’s the buzz about a beekeeping project by two of our first-year students of Jerry Sweeten (biology).

Planning a fund-raiser? We must have approval from College Advancement, which is charged with raising funds for the College, and coordinating on-campus and off-campus solicitation for funds, incuding in-kind gifts. Students, faculty and staff and organizations must submit a written proposal to the Vice President for College Advancement at least 30 days before any organized fund-raising – on- or off campus. We need approval from College Advancement before submitting any grant proposals. Here are guidelines for grant writing and the grant proposal request form for MC faculty and staff.

Is your Manchester College name badge turning blue? Yuck! Some newer badges apparently are defective. Our MC name badge should be crisp white with a logo and black lettering. If it is blurry or changing colors, take it to the Office of Publications and Design (garden level of the Ad Building, AD 3) by this Friday, Oct. 12, to get a replacement.

Mark that calendar

Date Change: Scientist Sarah Kurtz ’79 is speaking at convo, but a week later than originally scheduled. Mark your calendar for 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22 in Cordier Auditorium to hear the Dan David Prize winner talk about “Renewable Energy.” (She’ll also lecture at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 about solar energy, in Flory Auditorium.)

Here’s the All-Staff Meeting schedule. All begin at 8 a.m. sharp, following a 7:30 meet and eat. All fall on a Thursday. The next meeting is soon, in Wine Recital Hall.

Celebrating Diversity Workshop offers a positive environment for students, faculty and staff to discuss all kinds of issues … from stereotyping and prejudice to family roles, gender, physical capacity and religion. We’ve a choice of two days for the five-hour workshop: Sundays, Nov. 4 or Nov. 11, from 11:45 a.m. registration to 5 p.m., College Union.  Questions: Gary Zimmerman.

A non-denominational communion begins at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 15 in Petersime Chapel. The simple, 20-minute service is modeled on Eucharistic celebrations in mainline Protestant churches, planned by Campus Pastor Steve Crain and students. All are welcome, but Steve would appreciate a heads-up so he can plan properly, x5243.

Religion and Science Discussion Group will begin meetings at 6 p.m. this Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Zook’s (Manchester Sports Nutrition). On the agenda is an article by physicist John Bell on the interpretation of quantum mechanics. Faculty and others interested in joining the discussion (and getting a copy of the article) may want to contact Steve Crain (campus pastor), x5243.

Everybody swing! Get ready to Shim Sham Shake from 8 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30. That’s when MC is having a Swing Dance, with lessons and snacks! Manchester’s choirs are sponsoring the event to help fund the spring tour. MC students pay $2, other students, seniors pay $5 and the rest of us pay $10.

Notable

Welcome to Manchester College! Carrie B. Fry-Miller, Temporary Chapel Assistant

Those soccer shirts were worth $2,200 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. That’s how much our women’s soccer team raised Saturday by selling the pink shirts off their backs. Congratulations!

Psych students eye prisoners for study. Does teaching conflict resolution to inmates reduce violence in prisons and jails? Manchester College psychology students are seeking the answers to this and other questions about the impact of conflict resolution training on inmates in a service-learning project under the guidance of Marcie Coulter-Kern (psychology). Here’s the story.

Attend other colleges on tuition exchange. The College participates in three tuition exchanges: with the colleges of the Church of the Brethren, the Council of Independent Colleges Tuition Exchange and the Tuition Exchange Program (TEP). Employees eligible for tuition remission at Manchester who wish to attend classes or send a dependent to a Brethren college or a CIC tuition exchange school next year should contact Dave McFadden (x5226) by Oct.31 for details and to compete the paperwork. (MC currently does not qualify for TEP.) Tuition exchange/remission is not guaranteed, so complete the paperwork early.

Advisor needed for CoExist, a new student organization that seeks an atmosphere where people of all religions – focusing on Islam, Christian and Judaism – can educate and create an understanding through dialogue. Student Zach VanWinkle is the contact, but the group cannot function officially on campus without an advisor, notes Shanon Green (student activities), x5029.

Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture is on campus Tuesday, Oct. 23. To have a rep speak in your class, or for an appointment, contact Thelma Rohrer, x5327. Encourage potential Chicago Center interns to make individual appointments. Chicago Center will have an information table at lunchtime in the upper College Union, and reps will conduct an info session 3 to 4 p.m. in the Intercultural Center.

Celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Church of the Brethren in Germany this summer! Learn about Brethren Heritage. Student Carol Fike is helping Thelma Rohrer coordinate the MC trip; they have flyers and information. Contact Carol Fike with your MC box number and she’ll send a flyer your way!

The Manchester Investment Club will have its monthly meeting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17 in the College Union. There may be money to invest. Prospective faculty and staff members are welcome. The per share yearly gain as of September 30 was 12.7 percent.  – Richard Harshbarger (emeriti economics), treasurer

Wow!   Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

Everybody's talking about how great Homecoming 2007 was, combining Parents & Family Weekend with dedication of our College Union, and those special events stitched into the fun from the dedication of the Dan West plaque in the Muir Peace Garden to the theatre partying (and Foxfire performance!), the Spartan and M Association celebrations, and the donor and alumni celebrations, and the kid's pumpkin painting by our future educators, and that really odd basketball game, the golf outing, and the hours and hours of preparations and smiles -- especially by our College Advancement team!

What a fantastic Success Center open house Oct. 1! It was well-planned and executed.  It was high-energy and lots of fun!  Most importantly, it continued to reinforce the idea to 105 student attendees that the Success Center is their place for academic, career, and personal assistance.  Thanks to everyone who put in time and effort in making last night such a success.  Special thanks go to Jennifer Fisher and Rebecca Parker and the tremendous amount of work they invested in making this event outstanding. – Stuart Jones

President Switzer received praise at a recent speech at Shepherd’s Center for the design of the beautiful Celebrating Stewardship 2006-2007 President’s Report and Honor Roll. Thanks to Brenda Carver for her design! Notes Jo: “We all share that appreciation for a stunning publication.
