Transitions

Want to know where all the acorns are buried on campus? Ask Leslie Pettit '79 (college advancement), but ask her quickly! Leslie is leaving us Friday, ending more than 18 years. From typesetting to database entry to researching grants and receipting donations … she has held all kinds of jobs! Leslie has worked every International Fair, helped decorate campus for Christmas, assisted with plays and made our alumni feel right at home. Join a celebration of Leslie’s devotion to Manchester College (and acorns) at a reception 3:30 to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22 in Wampler Auditorium. Her last day is this Friday.

Congratulations, farewell to Leslie Augustyniak, assistant director of admissions, on her new job as community development manager/program specialist with the Girl Scouts of Limberlost Council in Fort Wayne. Leslie, an MC grad, joined the admissions staff four years ago. Her invaluable work is the reason many students are on campus today. Her last day is this Friday.

News to know ...

MCConnect is available for mid-semester grade entry, now until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22. Adjuncts must submit their hard-copy grade sheets to the Registrar by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22. All faculty must submit hard copies of their grades. Questions: Registrar’s Office, x5234.

Alert! No internet, no e-mail, no access to shared drives this Friday, Oct. 19. Nada. Plan accordingly while ITS and telephone contractors work their magic.

What to do with all that off-line time this Friday, in the throes of Fall Break? Dress for the day is “relaxed,” for those who might want to get down and dirty. Some possibilities:

  1. Take well-deserved time off, using vacation or floating holidays (with supervisor approval).
  2. Catch up on work that doesn’t require networks or internet, assuming you’ve remembered to transfer those files to our desktop, or a CD or a thumb/flash drive.
  3. Clean your office, your files, your hard drive, your shelves …
  4. Got lots of confidential documents that need destroying? Don’t waste time shredding, just haul them to the special (one day only) guarded container on the north side of the Ad Building on Friday. Our staff will personally take the material for disposal and watch as it is destroyed.
  5. A second container in the same place will take paper for normal recycling. So clean those files!

While Coach Shannon Griffith is a prime suspect, the MEMO Lady has her money on Doug Shoemaker. After all, he was the former Cheerleading coach, and we think he gave Sami the ax when she gained too much weight for the pyramids. What do you think? Check out the evidence gathered by Manchester’s Finest, read the tips, or just get yer jollies at the Who Killed Sami Spartan website, authored by those scalawags at The Writing Center.Think you can solve it? Oct. 31 is the deadline.

The cashier counter is closed Friday, Oct. 19. We need the network to process transactions.

Our contact for the CIC Tuition Exchange Program now is Sherri Shockey, director of student financial services. Employees who have not done the necessary paperwork for next year should contact Sherri by Oct. 30. If you have contacted Dave McFadden (who used to be the contact for the CIC program), he has given your materials to Sherri.

Soprano Debra Lynn has selected a challenging and exciting program for her faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24 in Wine Recital Hall. American Art Songs and Arias is the title. Expect variety, and her own writings.

Native American performers will use the College mall as their stage at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 for a special convocation. Ash and Reuben Fast Horse will perform Lakota songs, dances and stories. (Rain = Cordier Auditorium) The faculty business meeting at the same time is postponed to Nov. 2.  The Fast Horse family also will perform at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25 in Cordier Auditorium. Both performances are free, public and carry VIA credit. Here’s more about Fast Horse.

The International Fashion Show on Friday, Oct. 26 will feature styles from at least 18 countries. The event starts at 7 p.m. in Wampler, a collaboration of the Black Student Union, Asian Awareness Association, Hispanos Unidos and International Association. The program is cancer awareness, with a free-will donation to The Scout Fuller Fund for Social Justice.

Tuesday, Oct. 23 is the Health Fair, when we gather in the PERC for a wealth of wellness assistance, testing, stretching, poking, goodie bags … 7 to 11 a.m. for all students, faculty, staff, our immediate families and retirees of the College. Insurance does not cover this. Make checks for tests out to Manchester College. Collect a Wellness point. Questions?  Tara Vogel, x5306 or Lana Groombridge,  x5353.

Thinking out of the box … class at midnight. On Wednesday, Nov. 14, students in Jim Falkiner’s class in Entrepreneurial Thinking also will think outside the time zone when innovative thinker Kent Sweitzer lectures live from his home in Hiroshima, Japan. We’re invited to join them, in Science Center 102. Jim also is bringing Vera Bradley co-founder Pat Miller to campus Oct. 24. Here’s the story.

Tuscany recipes of Jo and Dave Switzer were featured in Cook’s Corner in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette on Oct. 10, and atop the paper’s home page. Here’s a link to the story, or see it on the bulletin board on the garden level of the Ad Building. Thanks, Jo and Dave, for spending time with the reporter and photographer!
