News to know ...

Caught in the Act: Corny Troyer! A couple of weeks ago, we celebrated National Customer Service Week with a contest. HR received 31 nominations of witnessed excellent customer service. The winner (mechanic Corny Troyer) received a $50 gift certificate; the nominator (Joy Groninger, publications and design) received a $25 certificate. Why Corny? Glad you asked ….

Joy asked Corny if she could borrow some tools to remove stickers from windows as part of the Holl-Kintner move. Much to her surprise, Corny dropped what he was doing and spent the balance of the afternoon helping her, even staying past his normal quitting time to get the job done.

Congratulations Corny and Joy, and thanks to all

who provide excellent customer service every day!

Action-Packed Classrooms … how’s that for a promise about a Manchester College workshop Tuesday, Nov. 6 for area teachers. Our faculty is invited to join Fit4Learning for a day stuffed with ways to invigorate and engage students and teachers alike, led by Cathie Summerford, teacher, teacher teacher, internationally acclaimed author, Ironman triathaloner. More than 40 Wabash County teachers are signed up. Want to know more? Lana Groombridge.

It’s the first Sunday in November, do you know what that means? Change the clocks! We say goodbye to Daylight Savings Time and revert to Standard Time this Sunday morning, Nov. 4. Set clocks back 1 hour. Hopefully, Microsoft will do the same in our computers and we should not have to do a thing to our Outlook calendars, etc. We’re expecting our clocks and ADP also to change, but ITS will keep an eye out.

Our new Voice Over IP (VoIP) phone system is perking in ITS, with a Dec. 6 deadline. Installation is under way. To learn about our new terrific features (speakerphone, conference calls, online directory, etc.), sign up soon with Allison Keating (ITS) for classes on Monday, Dec. 3; Tuesday, Dec. 4 and Wednesday, Dec. 5. Each class is 1½ hours: 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4 p.m., in the Clark Computer Center training lab, G104.

Stories, from the mouths of … staff and students. When our trustees toured the Success Center last Friday, they were greeted by the staff and students, who told their stories. In each area, students put aside their nervousness (kinda) to tell about success-building counseling, tutoring, health and job search assistance they have received. Pictured: Tara Vogel (health services), who brought senior international student Thomas Bimba to the storytelling.

Brrrr, feel that chill? That means colorful leaves, coats … and the final exam schedule! Here’s a link to the Fall 2007 Final Exam Schedule, also available, of course, on the Registrar’s home page. Share this information with students, who will not receive paper copies of the schedule. (Adjuncts will receive paper copies.)

Peace philosophers convene at MC this weekend, and we’re invited to listen in. Is peace possible? About 40 philosophers from around the nation will make presentations and discuss the question, as Concerned Philosophers for Peace meet Nov. 1-4. The conference is hosted by our Department of Religion and Philosophy. Here’s the story and lots of links.

All-College Meeting is next Thursday afternoon! Faculty and staff are invited to hear updates on the work of the Board of Trustees last week at their fall meeting. We’ll gather Thursday, Nov. 8, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Flory Auditorium, Science Center. Here’s the agenda, followed by Q&A:

            v  Strategic priorities update

v  Developing and using benchmarking data

v  Cash flow at the end of the capital campaign

            v  A new Vision Fund

Learn CPR and how to use the automatic external defibrillator (AED) at a six-hour class this Saturday, Nov. 3. The lesson, open to the first six people who contact Tara Vogel (health services), covers adult, child and infant CPR/AED and brings certification. The adult-only portion is only four hours. Cost is $4; class begins at 8 a.m.
