News to know ...

Our partnership with the town to solve the May Day problem = Best Program of the Year, says the Governor’s Commission for a Drug-Free Indiana, Northeast Regional Advisory Board. North Manchester Police Chief Dave Young and Beth Switzer-Riley (student development) accepted the award Nov. 1. In a nutshell:

Before: Loud parties, property damage sometimes exceeding $10,000, outraged townsfolk, 10 to 50 arrests, College and town working independently to curb the problem.

The Program: 20-proactive initiatives of collaboration of town and College, including grants from Wabash County AACTION, hundreds of hours of time, quadrupling police, doubling College security.

Only one Year Later: NO reports of property damage, no illegal consumption arrests, only a few noise complaints. “You couldn’t walk around a corner without seeing a police officer.”

Congratulations to accounting students who made the finals of the Indiana CPA Society’s annual Case Study Competition, and came home with an honorable mention and $100! Led by Tim Ogden (accounting/business), our four-student team had 10 days to compose a succession plan for the partners of a fictitious CPA firm; they then made oral presentations Nov. 2. The team: Sarah Conwell, Amy Crow, Ha Phan and Margaret Siddiqui.

Need a flu shot? Health Services director and R.N., Tara Vogel, will give flu shots in The Oaks, College Union on Monday, Nov. 12 and Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $13; make checks payable to Manchester College.

The Procurement Policy has changed. The threshold now is $2,500 for budget officers, department chairs, directors and managers. The new policy (and travel reimbursement policy) and forms are updated, on the U:drive, in the BUSINESS folder. Our P-card profiles reflect the change. Questions: Mike Leckrone

Have you checked out Minitab, a very capable statistical package to replace SPSS? Our license for SPSS is costly, and sometimes unusable. Minitab is 1/5 the cost, and available for all of our PCs, including faculty- and student-owned PCs. The college has both SPSS and Minitab licenses this year. Here’s more about Minitab. Questions? Michael Case (ITS).

Need software in our computer labs for January Session or Spring Semester? Now’s the time for faculty to alert ITS, so the software is installed and tested before classes begin.

Crossing Borders … that’s the title for the Manchester Symphonic Band’s performance next Friday night, Nov. 16 in Cordier Auditorium. The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m., with trips to Russia, Ireland, and even other worlds. Suzanne Gindin is conducting.

Holidays with Different Religions is the topic Lunch and Learn on Nov. 15 for all employees. Campus Pastor Steve Crain is the speaker for the event, sponsored by Health Services, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Café, College Union.

Imagine the challenge, and the honor, of culling through 982 paper abstracts by African studies scholars. That was part of Benson Onyeji’s (social studies) leadership on the program committee for the annual meeting of the African Studies Association, held Oct. 18-21 in New York City. This largest gathering of its type offered 731 papers (after culling) and 212 panels and roundtables. Benson also presented “Globalization and the Localization of Politics in Africa,” and co-chaired the politics section.

His peers call him “Leader.” Kim Duchane (exercise/sport sciences) has received the 2007 Leadership Award of the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Kim has served on the IAHPERD Board of Directors, as its president and chaired the Advocacy Committee.

Manchester was well-represented at the Academy for International Education (Region VI) in Indianapolis last month. Jacquilline Nagila (multicultural affairs) co-presented on internationalization of local communities and won the case study conundrum at the event of NAFSA, Association of International Educators.

The Teachers Credit Union e-mail scam is at it again … Don’t respond, just delete. It’s prolific, so it probably will return again.

Thanks to all staff and faculty members for your support and kindness following the passing of my brother, Bob Gahl. My family and I were grateful for all the prayers, thoughts and well wishes at this difficult time. Bob gave so much of himself and asked for so little in return, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.  Les and Marie Gahl

The newest exhibit in Gallery G is contributed by painter Steve Creighton of Warsaw.  His still lifes use themes of light and dark to create background mood and outline objects. Here’s more.

Our new Gallery G will highlight the works of more than 40 student artists from at least six area colleges and universities in February, in a juried show hosted by The Art Consortium. More to come about this outstanding show, and thanks to Thelma Rohrer (art) for bringing it to Manchester College! (Did you know our Gallery G can accommodate more works than IPFW’s art gallery?)
