as Manchester College’s 14th president
3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1, with a program at 4 p.m.
Cordier Auditorium Lobby
Presidential transition.
As Jo Young Switzer assumes the President’s Office on Wednesday,
we’ll gather for a reception to welcome her to exciting
times ahead. Because all of us simply won’t fit in the
President’s Office, we’ll gather in Cordier between 3 and 5 p.m.
on Wednesday, Dec. 1. Board Chair Dave Haist, Parker, Vice
Chair Bentley Peters and Jo will have something to say about it
all at 4 p.m. Cake, coffee,
cider and congratulations to Jo, and to Parker for a job well
done. Marden parties to come, of course. The entire College
community, and friends from near and far are invited to this
informal party hosted by our Trustees.
Get the facts with your fax.
If you’re still using faxes, you’ll want to use our Manchester
College cover sheet that does a little advertising with some
quick facts. You can find the fax cover sheet on the U Drive, in
the OOPS folder. The cover sheet is freshly updated with the
latest facts. And that’s a fact!
It’s called “intellectual capital,”
and we’ve received $1 million from Lilly Endowment to build our
investment in faculty, research, information technology,
high-tech equipment for the new Science Center and toward the
future use of Holl-Kintner Hall. Thanks to Parker for writing
the grant request the Endowment found engaging.
An insider’s guide to Spartan basketball.

“Spartan 3-Point Club” to build interest and support for our
basketball program. Gil Weldy, executive director of the M
Association, is assisting. The Club meets weekly for lunch on
Tuesdays in the Upper Union lounge (except today, Nov. 29) to
talk with the coach, meet the players and talk basketball. Coach
Nadborne will review past games and give a scouting report on
upcoming opponents. Fans can enjoy fellowship and friendship,
while finding out more about Manchester College basketball. The
noon buffet costs $6; the meeting will last 45 minutes. Today’s
meeting (the only Monday meeting) is in the Lower Union dining
room. Meetings: Nov. 29 (a Monday), Dec. 7, Dec.
14, Jan. 4, Jan. 11, Jan. 18, Jan. 25, Feb. 1, Feb. 8, Feb. 15

MC is hosting a conversation about the arts
– especially about the role northeast Indiana colleges and
universities play in preparing audiences for the arts
–
this Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
in (where else?) Wine Recital Hall. Presidents and others from
area colleges will participate, with the assistance of Arts
United. The format for this meeting is a “conversation,” not
lectures. “We are concerned about building robust audiences and
other support for cultural events,” notes Parker, in
coordinating this gathering. Friday, the group will attempt to
define the issues, try to understand the challenges and identify
resources and next steps.
“We invite the participation of anyone interested in the
strengthening of our cultural and artistic organizations by
preparing fuller audiences from those students whom we prepare
for society in other useful ways,”
adds Parker.
It's time to smile for the 2005 Aurora!

Wednesday, Dec. 1 and 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2 in the
Winger Conference Room. It's free and only takes a few minutes.
After you smile fetchingly for the shutter, your name will be
entered in a raffle for one of 10 exciting prizes.
About those bare trees in Cordier …
It’s not too late! There’s still time for College departments,
organizations, groups to decorate a tree for the annual Festival
of Trees. While the organized time for decorating (with food)
has passed, just give Jennifer Vincent a buzz or e-mail to
arrange an alternate time to put the bling on a tree. The
Festival officially begins Dec. 1.
The Class of 2009 is gathering,
even as we read this. So far, 620 high school students have sent
applications to our Admissions folks, up 17.4 percent from this
time last year. And, as we scamper on the cusp of the coaches’
recruiting season (and weekends away from their families), the
number of student athletes applying also is on the increase.
Football players applying have almost doubled applicants at this
time last year. (FYI: Applicants from student athletes were down
last year.) Way to go recruiters all!
Post-Thanksgiving Ambrosia that’s fat-free.
Relax and enjoy listening to community and College writers share

The detail and variety of these Nativity sets is incredible …

invited to meet Max and Joyce at the reception, in the Link
Gallery at Wine Recital Hall.

Strike
and the grounds student crew members are stubbornly raking
leaves for weeks, despite a broken leaf vacuum. The work is
more difficult and time-consuming the old-fashioned way. Thank
you for your hard work and your commitment to a well-groomed
campus. And best wishes for the prompt return of the vacuum!
Faculty
takes mid-semester grades seriously. Numerous advisers have
reported that their first-year students got a constructive
wake-up call and changed their approach to learning.
Mid-semester grades require extra work, and it has paid off this
year in getting the attention of new students about their parts
in their own success!
