Future student and MC parent alert …About 70 northern Indiana juniors and their parents are visiting us today for a full schedule of all that is Manchester. They were invited because of how they did on the PSAT, reports Jolane Rohr (admissions). Extend the grand ol’ Manchester welcome and hope we’ll see them again! These 140-plus junior/parent visitors are a record for Junior Scholars Day.

The booth areas for The Oaks are in place, as is the pizza oven and much of the curved serving area. The Campus Store stretches wonderfully, with lots of room for  “stacks” of textbooks. From the balcony, the dining commons looks like this … Inspiring. Spacious. Exciting. Inviting. Sigh.  SpartanCam offers a great view of the dining commons exterior construction. (Thanks, Chris Garber, for the time and the tour.)

Police and students together, and we’re smiling. Mary Lahman’s (communication studies) Introduction to Public Relations class is extending goodwill to the North Manchester Police Department this weekend. Students have invited the officers to dinner Sunday evening, as well as some College leaders. The informal gathering in the Oakwood Great Room will focus on the positive the NMPD does for the community, said team leader Kathryn Hinga, who is hoping at least 50 students will attend.

Critical deadline alert: Wednesday, Dec. 20 is the absolute last day to enroll for health benefits. Everybody should have received their enrollment packages from HR by now. (If not, contact Crysta Borden, x5288.) Health and dental coverage end Dec. 31 for employees and dependents who do not indicate their plan choices by Dec. 20.

We have video! Missed the health benefit meeting? Need a refresher? The very first session was captured for our viewing pleasure. Here’s the link: mms://media/insurance. Handouts for all of the PowerPoint presentation are available from Human Resources – pick them up before viewing the video. Questions? Dale Carpenter, x5393.

Primo parking! Six more employees who are supporting the College through payroll deductions will have short walks to their offices. They are boosting our percentage of employee giving to the College. Remember, every gift counts – no matter what size – to help us boost that percentage and stand tall in the eyes of foundations like Lilly Endowment. To deduct your gift from your pay, contact Rita Schroll in the Office of College Advancement. Thanks to all who are stepping up, and to those who already have remembered MC in their 2006 giving! Here are the winners of the December primo parking drawing:

                                                Sandy Bendsen (admissions)

                                                Crysta Borden (human resources)

                                                Penny Deal (academic affairs)

Kelly Hippensteel (health and counseling services)

                                                Stuart Jones (Success Center)

                                                Jenny Perusek (college advancement)

Those who missed the Chapel lovefest for Pastor Jim Chinworth today will have one last chance … next Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. That’s when Jim responds to today’s exclamations. Tapestry, bells, singing, drumming, DeWitt pianoing, hugging, ohmmming, student tales, seasonal photos … you had to be there. The farewell reception is 3:30 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 7.

Musical colleges … or tuition exchange programs. Sandy Bendsen and/or Dave McFadden are our contacts if we (or our dependents) want to study at another school for 2007-2008. 11 of us or our spouses or children are at other colleges – Hanover, Evansville, St. Francis, Franklin, Indianapolis and St. Joseph’s. Actually, there are two programs, CIC Tuition Exchange of the Council of Independent Colleges AND Tuition Exchange, a similar program that requires us to balance the number of students we send out with the number of students coming to MC. (Due to imbalance, we are not eligible to send students for 2007-2008.) Tuition covered depends on employee’s service at MC. (We are hosting eight students of parents at McPherson, St. Francis, Defiance, Franklin and Tri-State AND two students through the Tuition Exchange, from Marian and St. Joseph’s.)

High fashion at Manchester College … our international students and faculty are sharing their traditional fashion with the community this Friday night. The third annual International Fashion Show starts at 7 p.m. in Wampler. Here’s the story or better yet, visit our home page. While the event is free, a canned good or other non-perishable item for the AIDS Task Force is appreciated.

Speaking of AIDS, boxes are all over campus for collection of non-perishable food donations to the 11-county AIDS Task Force, based in Fort Wayne. Only a couple days left, though, to pitch in!

The Campus Store Holiday Open House is 1 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 18. In addition to eats, expect a 20 percent discount storewide and a drawing for gift bags.

The Candidate … Manchester’s own reality show for the job-bound. Our Success Center plans to profile five seniors as they search for jobs this spring. But this is no elimination stunt led by a billionaire with bad hair … Stuart Jones never has a bad hair day! So … nudge a senior toward Liz Bushnell (x5241) in the Career Center for an application. The five profiled will gain pizza, prizes, fame … and tons of career assistance. Deadline is next Monday, Dec. 4.

Intersection … it’s where our education alumni meet up with what’s happening now in Manchester Education. Check out Intersection, the latest electronic newsletter and networking tool of our educators.

Controlled Catastrophe is looking for a few good laughs. Our campus improv comedy troupe craves some new faces, and fresh humor. Come on! You have nothing to lose … and chortles to share! Auditions at 8 tonight, Nov. 29 and Thursday, Nov. 30 in the Helman great room. Stop by!

Scott Strode’s class is going to New Zealand in January, but needs another driver for the trip to O’Hare Airport. Give him a call; he’s getting kinda nervous. They need to leave the College at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6. And, they need a ride back from O’Hare at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 22.  Contact Scott, x5350

Wreaths, trees, sprays, even a centerpiece may still be available from the fund-raiser of Manchester Activities Council (MAC). First-come, first-served, say Jessica Hicks and Amanda Hayward, x5248. Contact either of them if you want to purchase some greenery. The wreaths, centerpiece and live trees are $18, sprays are $15.

Jeff Osborne (chemistry) has a $3,000 grant from the Indiana Academy of Science to continue research he started last summer with funding from the Manchester College Summer Research Program. He’s focusing on evolving enzymes capable of degrading polystyrene.

Leading from MC … Franklin Olive (accounting and business) is a 2006-07 director of the Fort Wayne chapter of Financial Executives International.

Our international students will talk about the Manchester College they know at the next gathering of the Manchester Community Club. The dinner party begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6 in the Oakwood great room. Reservations ($9 for meal) are due by Dec. 1 with Gil/Dorothy Weldy at 982-1355 or Tim/Roberta Hoffman at 982-9487.

Wow!     Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

You may have noticed the remodeling in the Publications and Design office to make the workspace more functional. Last year’s budget (!!) is paying for materials for the job and physical plant staff is doing the work. Thanks to Joy Groninger for her creativity in pulling all parts of the project together!

Say Chet! for the Aurora yearbook photographer, who will set up on Tuesday, Dec. 5 in Holl-Kintner 101 for photos of faculty, staff and students. Just show up; no appointment needed to ensure you likeness is in the yearbook! Two sessions: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Manchester College Ride Board. Does that Christmas drive around Chicago have you bummed? Getting poorer by the mile commuting from Fort Wayne? Somebody at Manchester may love your company on the drive! The Drive Board is outside the Mailroom in Holl-Kintner. Drivers post their destinations and contact information. Riders contact the drivers to negotiate terms of the ride. This is not a service of the College, just a vehicle for communication. Contact is Marilyn Reish

Mark your calendars! for the all-staff meetings, when we’ll recognize service, learn what's going on, do a Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts of campus we rarely see.
