Manchester has a new 150-hour accounting program that puts our students capably into jobs right when firms are shopping for employees for the heavy audit and tax season. It’s a perfect fit for our students, it’s a perfect fit for the College, it’s a perfect fit for employers, says Jan Fahs, who leads the program. Click here to learn more …

That Christmas Eve service “Enter the Light of Life” that first ran two years ago … starring many from the Manchester College community … is back! The Hallmark Channel will air the service at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 24 (Eastern and Pacific Time). You may recall the service was filmed at Bethany Seminary. Here’s our original news release, listing many Manchester connections. Want a DVD of the service? Contact Brethren Press. For more about the service, click here.

It theoretically, only takes a minute to sign the Employee Handbook receipt in the back of the book and turn it in to our supervisor, but the MEMO Lady was easily distracted by all the photos and information and neat stuff inside. Of course, it’s all online, too, where details will remain more current. Anyway, every employee needs to sign that receipt in the back of the handbook, right away, and return it to their supervisor or HR.

Last day to sign up for health insurance is Dec. 20. This is not like before. This time, if we miss the deadline, we’re culled from the system. We’ll have NO health insurance. There is no automatic rollover for those who do not sign up. This is a new program that requires new signup. The old program disappears. Complete the paperwork and submit it to Human Resources before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Confused? Our HR folks stand ready to respond:

Crysta: x5288 or cborden@manchester.edu

What do England, Ireland, Spain, Ecuador, France and Greece have in common? Our spring 2007 study abroad students! Four are headed for England, three to Spain and the rest are scattering in other directions with Brethren Colleges Abroad. “Manchester College is recognized as an extremely supportive community to individuals who move beyond their comfort zones as student ambassadors into new realms of culture and education,” notes coordinator Thelma Rohrer, who is grateful for all who helped these 11 students find their place abroad:

Cheltenham, England: junior Rosalie Brubaker, communication studies; senior Tai Cerney, accounting; junior Megan Leese, biology-chemistry; and sophomore Bryan Pehlke, accounting.

Galway, Ireland: junior Sarah Hall, peace studies

Barcelona, Spain: junior Tia Harrison, biology-chemistry; junior Aaron Hostetler, sociology; sophomore Stephanie Taylor, management/Spanish

Quito, Ecuador: junior Caitlyn Haynes, sociology

Strasbourg, France: junior Christopher Hindsley, secondary education/French and English

Athens, Greece: senior Mark Keen, mathematics

No fees … no kidding! Just for those of us embarking on this new Health Savings Account insurance plan, Teachers Credit Union is waiving all fees to participating Manchester employees. Representatives of the credit union will visit campus 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 19-20, to sign us up, in Funderburg Library. We also can visit TCU, in its Warsaw, Rochester or Huntington offices – before Jan. 1. Other institutions, of course, will be happy to take our money. They may charge fees; or may waive fees, too. Or charge fees until a minimum balance is attained. This is, after all, the shopping season!

How quickly we forgot that Jim Adams* (art) challenge to us to identify the symbolism of his triptych artwork for the Science Center. Bet Teflon® is in there somewhere! He’s getting responses from across the pond, even, but not so many from on campus. He promises to spill all at the Feb. 19 convo. Here’s the link to the original story, but the view is much better in person! Thoughts about the chemistry panel are especially sparse. A hint, it isn’t ALL science … music and other arts are liberally represented.

Another EeeeeZeeee message about the holiday: Faculty with student employees remember to approve EZLabor before leaving campus for break. EZLabor does not work from off campus. Dec. 23 ends this pay period.

Faculty needs no reminder, but grades are due before 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18 to the Registrar. Wow! This semester sure sped by! Fall semester grades will be available Wednesday, Dec. 20 on MCConnect, via the Registrar’s web site.

The academic and web calendars are correct, but the dates are wrong for January Session and spring semester in the 2006-2007 Catalog. Check the Registrar’s web site for details.

As if we could forget that the Trustees Christmas Party is tomorrow, from 4 to 7 p.m. around the mall. We will progressively move through five chowdown sites – Petersime Chapel, Link Gallery/Wine lobby, Cordier lobby, Science Center and Funderburg Library. Santa, a storyteller, rides, the Nativity sets, the decorations, music, lights … And, we’ll register at any of the five sites to win Jo’s apple & apricot chutney and French brie Cheese OR a $25 Campus Store gift certificate.

Only 13 of our 2006 grads are MIA in Betty Butterbaugh’s annual exhaustive Career Services survey of who has jobs/schooling where. Help her maintain her 100 percent record and take a gander at the list below. If you know somebody who knows somebody who knows where any of these grads are, please let Betty know. Betty’s diligence helps us market our terrific job rate for our grads: almost 97 percent of our 2006 grads had jobs or were in further schooling or full-time volunteer work within six months of graduation. Other colleges estimate their rates. They don’t have Betty.

Our ninth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service is on a Friday night “next” year, at 7 p.m. on Jan. 12. The principal speaker is the Rev. Dr. Dwight N. Hopkins of The University of Chicago Divinity School, senior editor of the Henry McNeil Turner/Sojourner Truth Series in Black Religion. Plans are for the popular Greater Progressive Baptist Church Choir of Fort Wayne to provide music. See interim pastor Sonia Smith for details.

Employees by department. We have a nifty web directory College Personnel by Office for those of us who just can’t think of the name of that wonderful person we need to contact, but know the department.

Good friends – it is hard for me to find ways to express my appreciation for all of your kind words, well wishes and many farewell gifts these past few weeks. I’ve never been more overwhelmed by an outpouring of gratitude. Thank you. We will not be far away; our address and phone number will be the same yet we know how worlds so close have trouble intersecting. I’ve greatly appreciated my time here and the many relationships and insights that have developed these eight-plus years will sustain me in the months and years to come. I pray that the future will find Manchester College an even more vital and strong educational community. Best wishes.     – Jim Chinworth

The Manchester Investment Club will have its monthly meeting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 20 in Funderburg Library. There will be money to spend. Note the change of location and time. Prospective faculty and staff members are welcome.        – Richard Harshbarger, treasurer

Wow!     Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

Manchester has a new scholarship for Nigerian students funded by a new donor, thanks to great communication between Jenna Oke (art) and Jay Nussel (development). The donors approached Jenna’s mother, wanting to fund a scholarship honoring Jenna’s father. Jenna sought out Jay, who sought out the donors. This week, the first installment of many arrived to fund “a very nice” scholarship. “None of this would have happened if it weren’t for Jenna’s willingness to pass this information along to me, because this donor had no previous contact with MC and was not in our data base,” said Jay. “Jenna made sure the donor knew who I was and that I would be calling. She absolutely was instrumental in this scholarship being established.”

Oldies but still goodies ...

Actually, this really is an old photo the MEMO Lady

ran across when trolling the Archives recently.

Contest! Name all three in the photo,

and the year, to win a

way-cool gift from the Alumni Office.

The obvious (and their spouses)

may not participate.

Mark your calendars! for the all-staff meetings, when we’ll recognize service, learn what's going on, do a Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts of campus we rarely see.
