Women’s World Chess Champion Susan Polgar is coming to campus, on Monday, April 13. Thanks to Judd Case (communication studies) and his connections, the world champion from 1996 to 1999 will present at convo, and maybe take on multiple challengers (maybe) at once. Polgar leads the Institute for Chess Excellence at Texas Tech University and is author of Queen of the King’s Game, Breaking Through, and other books. Here’s a neat CBS clip about her work with kids. Judd is a long-time member of the U.S. Chess Federation.
Students have Fall 2008 course evaluations. Please remind them that they have them; that their responses are important to their teacher and the College; that their responses are anonymous; that their teacher, the department chair and the dean will read those anonymous responses ... and that the form is brief.

Al Williams ends nine years as associate dean for academic affairs to return full-time to teaching, and leading the Biology Department. Mark Huntington (exercise/sport sciences) will step into Al’s shoes, and office, beginning this summer. Notes Dean Sharfman: “It is often a thankless job and Al has contributed in key ways to the betterment of the college.” Mark, with 25 years at Manchester, will continue as ESS chair and split his time, as Al did, between his duties as a faculty member and as associate dean.

The Manchester Investment Club will have its monthly meeting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17 in Haist Commons of the College Union. There will be money to invest. Prospective staff and faculty members are welcome.
Early birders will love the Tippecanoe Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count. It runs sunrise to sundown on Jan. 1 in a 15-mile radius of Oswego in northwestern Kosciusko County. The MEMO Lady can attest participants need no birding experience for the full-day discovery, just warm clothes and a sense of wonder.

HCAC academic stars. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) has tapped 11 of our varsity student-athletes for the fall Academic All-Conference. All have at least a cumulative 3.5 GPA: seniors Joel Hawkins (football), Ryan Deeter (soccer), Stephanie Taylor (soccer), Heriju Gadzama (soccer) and Danielle Walker (tennis); juniors Trent Weisser (football), Brandon Wells (football) and Kyle Pletcher (cross country); and sophomores Karla Conrad (volleyball), Megan Miller (cross country) and Katherine Pea (cross country).
