News to know...

What a Christmas present! Nine days! Campus will close Monday through Friday of Christmas week, Dec. 22-26. Monday is a gift from the College, to accompany the already full stocking of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday off. Staff will use a floating holiday or vacation day for Tuesday, Dec. 23 (hourly employees have a third option, to go without pay that day). The Registrar’s Office will be open Monday, Dec. 22 to receive grades from faculty, and Safety will monitor campus as usual. We’ll save on heat and other utilities, commuters will save on gas … and we’ll just generally sing!

TIAA-CREF will make on-campus presentations about asset allocation strategy at 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13 in the Lahman Room of the College Union. Both presentations are the same and will include info about new funds. In addition, a TIAA-CREF representative will provide one-on-one counseling on campus Friday, Nov. 14, by appointment. To sign up, call 866-842-3516 and press “0” or go to the TIAA-CREF website.

Don’t miss the EzLabor deadline! Beginning with Nov 10, the noon deadline for supervisor approval of EzLabor is absolute. An email specific to supervisors with unapproved and unresolved time pairs will be sent prior to noon on the approval day. After noon, unapproved and unresolved time pairs will be deleted. Questions: Anna Judy (human resources), x5559.

Name our new Spartan mascot. Sami Spartan has retired, making way for a fitter, more energetic successor. The winning name gets the author a $50 Campus Store gift certificate. Greet our new mascot at the Banker’s Classic Tournament on Friday, Nov. 21. He’ll debut just before the 7:45 p.m. game in the PERC. Submit your suggestion here.

The staff lunch at Tall Oaks has been rescheduled to Dec. 3. It’s no longer next week, due to a conflict. Details to come.

Festival of Trees … continues our tradition of competitive tree decorating, in a new location: the College Union. Decorating is Dec. 1-5, with judging the following week. Theme this year is “Holidays Around the World.” Winners receive money toward their spring budgets. To enter, send the name of your club/organization, a contact person and e-mail address to Shanon Green (student activities) by Nov. 24. Prizes: $75, $50 and $25.

Ho! Ho! Ho! It’s time to put the Board of Trustees Holiday Party on our schedules so we won’t miss out on the fun. It’s on a Friday night this year, Dec. 19, in Haist Commons. Invitations and RSVP details about this annual treat from our Trustees are still in the makings.

Welcome to the MC community! Brian McNabney, Maintenance Technician

Connect with the HelpDesk on the web. The first time we use the online HelpDesk request we will be asked for some details. See the recent all-campus e-mail from Michael Case for our organization code and password information. The login site will remember that information in the future. Here’s the link. When requesting help, provide as much detail as possible: the error message, what you were doing when the problem occurred, etc.

A recruiter for Indianapolis Peace Institute is on campus Wednesday, Nov. 12. Let Abby Fuller know if you would like Danielle Tate to speak in your class (5 minutes). The Peace Institute offers off-campus study for a semester, January Session or summer. Students of any major can study at the Institute and do an internship in Indianapolis at the same time.

We can help the Class of 2008 with its Senior Gift by hiring a senior to do odd jobs, etc. Need windows washed? A babysitter? Basement or garage cleaned out? Moving help? Hire a senior! Just e-mail Jenny Perusek (college advancement) with the job and wage estimate, and she’ll set you up!

Our phone books are green … er, gone! We’ll no longer provide those tree-eating phone books that we use only occasionally. Larry Gyrion, our Telephone Guy, offers these links to quick and green directory information:

Now we can get our College travel and other spending reimbursements electronically, too. Those who already receive payroll deposits directly into our bank accounts need only request E-Check on our reimbursement forms. Others need to provide their banking information to the Business Office. The updated forms are on the U drive. Questions: Mike Leckrone (business office).

We have a resident guru of best prices in our purchasing agent, Quentin Moudy. Budget officers will want to consult Quentin about careful spending opportunities, in finding new sources or reviewing spends. He has listings of many collaborative agreements and competitively bids contracts from associations. Also remember that we receive contract pricing, online ordering and free campus delivery with no minimum order from K & R Office Supply.

“It was the best conference I’ve ever attended,” says Carole Miller-Patrick (service opportunities/Indiana Reading Corps), recently returned with Campus Pastor Steve Crain from a forum on summer service-learning at Notre Dame, where they presented on our Pathways program. They were hobnobbing with the likes of Duke, Georgetown, Rice, Stanford, University of Michigan and Xavier.

Dean Glenn Sharfman delivered a paper, “The Legacy of Richard Rubenstein on Holocaust Scholars” at the Lessons and Legacy Conference at Northwestern University last weekend.

No, this has nothing to do with politics. The College Mathematics Journal has published “Leftist Numbers” by Andy Rich (mathematics) in its November 2008 issue. Page 330. The leftist number system consists of numbers with decimal digits arranged in strings to the left, instead of to the right. Congratulations, Andy.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is sharing with Manchester College its selection by BusinessWeek as one of the best companies for new college graduates to launch their careers. Enterprise has four of our graduates in its network. Says recruiter Jamie Meyer: “Enterprise has been very impressed with the quality of Manchester graduates because they consistently have what it takes, the skills and the drive, to run a business.”

Need software for your class? Let ITS know now what you’ll need installed in labs for January Session and Spring Semester. The advance notice gives ITS time for setup and testing.
