Transitions

What is that collective wailing coming from campus? Joy Groninger is retiring, ending 28½ years with the College on Dec. 19. Our current director of publication and design (she’s filled many roles) has vast institutional knowledge and has collected (and shared) scores and scores of faculty, student and alumni stories for the i found campaign. Dave McFadden: “... Joy made sense of and utilized to the utmost market research in ways that helped us reach and exceed recruiting goals ... Joy contributed well beyond the scope of her responsibilities, and we are grateful for her deep commitment and capable service to the College.” We wish you fine times, Joy, in your venture into retirement.

Joy of a different kind … webmaster and designer Dan Chudzynski will serve in the new position of director of marketing. He will lead the publication, design and marketing teams and carry website and design responsibilities. During his more than 10 years with Manchester, Dan has been most recognized for his creative design (and as a member of The Otho Winger Experience faculty/staff band).

Welcome to the fold! Glen M. Hauger, lecturer of music; Kathy G. Sears, visiting assistant professor of psychology (starts Jan. 7)

News to know...

Students in Brad Pyrah’s Non-Profit Management class are on a $20,000 mission to help provide a new playground for Manchester Elementary School. They are off to a great start: A chili supper for Manchester Elementary parents raised more than $1,600 and that 13-team student/faculty dodge ball tourney last Friday gained $390 for Project Playground. Here’s the rest of the story and a link to Project Playground.

Insurance enrollment time! We’ll face no changes in our health care coverage or in our costs for 2009. AND, the College will continue to make health savings account contributions to those of us in the high deductible health plan. Yea!!! We will not need to re-enroll in our plans unless we change plans, coverage or persons covered. BUT all of us must re-enroll in our life, dental and long-term disability coverage because we are switching to Met Life for those plans.

Insurance meetings on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2:30 p.m. or 4 p.m., Flory Auditorium, Science Center. We have two one-hour meeting opportunities on Tuesday to hear about the plans and receive enrollment forms. (Spouses welcome.) Open enrollment for the 2009 calendar year closes at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12. We must submit our forms before then.

Cross-country standout Andy Williams is off to NCAA Nationals this Saturday. The junior (athletic training) qualified by placing 11th on the NCAA Great Lakes Regional 8k course. Hanover College is hosting the NCAA National Championships. Andy is the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion and MVP. Here's the story.

Holiday check issue schedule. To accommodate Thanksgiving, the Business Office will run checks on Tuesday, Nov. 25, and put them in the mail the next day. Invoices that require payment before Dec. 4 should be submitted to Susie Snep by 3 p.m. this Monday, Nov. 24.

Planning a campus holiday event? Tell the MEMO Lady early so she can get them on the reindeer calendar.

This year we party on a Friday night: Dec. 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Children’s storytelling, holiday music, Santa, caroling, the Festival of Trees, art and Nativity displays … and FOOD! Hors d ’oeuvres and a full buffet in Haist Commons, plus a special area and menu for kids. For all MC employees and our families (or bring a friend). But we need to register!
Do it easily online, or contact Terri Jones (President’s Office) at x5050.

Festival of Trees … continues our tradition of competitive tree decorating, in a new location: the College Union. Decorating is Dec. 1-5, with judging the following week. Theme this year is “Holidays Around the World.” Winners receive money toward their spring budgets. To enter, send the name of your club/organization, a contact person and e-mail address to Shanon Green (student activities) by Nov. 24. Prizes: $75, $50 and $25.

Congratulations to David Hicks, who has received an Indiana Academy of Science grant of $1,040 to fund his research, “Leaf structure and lifespan in Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra): an experimental approach.”

Institutional Management of Study Abroad … Thelma Rohrer presented her expertise on that topic last week at the National Association of International Educators conference in Lexington, Ky. She also participated in leadership workshop for international educators and, in her three-year role as the elected education abroad liaison for Region VI, facilitated conference break-out sessions.

Kim Duchane presented “Disability Sport: A Practical Approach to Physical Education Teacher Education Training” at the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance conference in Indianapolis on Nov. 13. At the conference, four ESS students (Chelsea Bower, Kalie Carlisle, Melanie DeGrandchamp and Tyler Smith) presented on “International Games.”

We’ve received $1,639 for digital audio recording and editing equipment for our music computer lab, thanks to the grant writing of Tim Reed (music). Funded by Independent Colleges of Indiana, the software, microphone and other hardware will give our students opportunity to record, edit and mix their creative projects and present them with graphics.

The 190-member Downtown Rotary of Fort Wayne will hear about hiring millennial employees from our resident Career Services experts, Liz Bushnell and Jen Fisher, on Dec. 15. What a great way to raise mover-and-shaker awareness about Manchester College!

Scarves and wraps created by Jena Oke (art) are featured at the KenapocoMocha coffee shop downtown during November and December. Many items in her “Fibers: Spun, Woven, Felted, Stitched” exhibit are for sale.

The Writing Center is seeking workshop topic suggestions. The monthly workshops will begin this December, at noon on the third Wednesday. Personal writing, professional writing, technical writing, academic writing, web writing … send your suggestions to our Writing Center director, Tamara O’Hearn.

Virus alert. The email is supposedly from a sender like UPS or FedEx, claiming to have a failed delivery in your name. MC virus scanners likely will catch it, but just in case: Don’t open the message or any attachments. Click here for more about the UPS/FedEx Delivery Failure virus.

Human Resources...

Paychecks and vouchers for direct deposit next week go into U.S. Mail (not campus mail) on Wednesday, Nov. 26. However, the Business Office will release paychecks to us in person after 3 p.m. next Wednesday, but we need to let them know we want to do that by Monday, Nov. 24. This is a good time to ensure the address is correct on our earnings statements.

All EzLabor supervisor approvals must be complete by 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24. Not noon, but earlier for this holiday week. Please complete as much as possible in EzLabor on the previous Friday to help accommodate this short pay week. Supervisors have received instructions on how to access EzLabor from off-campus.

Oldies but goodies from past MEMOs..

Connect with the HelpDesk on the web. The first time we use the online HelpDesk request we will be asked for some details. See the recent all-campus e-mail from Michael Case for our organization code and password information. The login site will remember that information in the future. Here’s the link. When requesting help, provide as much detail as possible: the error message, what you were doing when the problem occurred, etc.
