If you witnessed or were the recipient of outstanding service at the College, submit your nomination to Human Resources before 5 p.m. next Monday, Oct. 15. The winner will receive a $50 Campus Store gift certificate; the winning nomination merits a $25 certificate.

All-Staff Meetings bring us together for updates, celebrations of service and connections. Our next one is Thursday, Oct. 23. Attendance is required. Manchester Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 70th season. The Sunday, Oct. 26 concert of community members, staff, faculty and students will highlight music by Grieg, Mussorgsky, Copland and Grofe, conducted by our Scott Humphries (music). Children's author Polacco coming to campus. We, and the public, get to share in the Nov. 5 visit of popular children’s author Patricia Polacco to campus and the community. We’re invited to Polacco’s pre-professional workshop for education majors at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 5 in the Lahman-Hoff rooms of the upper Union. Her topic: “The Heroes of My Life.” Here’s a link to her website.
Time is running out to see artworks of Amos Rodriguez in Gallery G of the upper College Union. Amos, an art student here, is studying anthropology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. His exhibit, in our Alumni Series, closes Sunday.

Dig for the Cure. Our volleyball team is marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a Dig for the Cure Match on Sunday, Oct. 12 against Rose-Hulman. The team is collecting pledges and donations for the Susan G. Komen Fund. Donate a flat amount or pledge for each MC dig. (An average match is 30 to 40 digs, reports Coach Kendra Marlowe.) Furthermore, we cannot put a period anywhere in the filename except just before the extension, such as file.name.xlsx. ITS recommends we start changing our file names and folder names so they will play nice with our new SharePoint portal when we begin using it. More to come.
The hills will be alive with music of the A Cappella Choir this coming spring. An Austrian tour is scheduled for March 22-28, reports choir director Debra Lynn. Concerts in Salzburg, Eisenstadt and Vienna. Of course, alumni and friends are invited! Contact Debra or the Alumni Office for details.

Contemporary music, in 60 seconds or less … Tim Reed’s electroacoustic work, He Changed Into His Brown Trousers, has been accepted for the FrammentAzioni project, a part of the “Contemporanea” music and arts festival Oct. 10-18 in Udine, Italy. The project features musical works 60 seconds or less, which will be played continuously during the “Contemporanea” festival and broadcast from Taukay Web radio, More than 1,000 works from 45 countries were entered in the competition.

Senior political science major Brittney Gick has received a $5,000 Freeman-ASIA Award to offset her BCA study abroad expenses this fall at the Dalian University of Foreign Language. Her study of ancient culture in Peru, hikes in the Bolivian jungle, participation in the presidential caucuses in Iowa, and leadership in campus organizations led to her success in achieving this competitive national award.
Sharpen your pencil … The Los Angeles Times Syndicate is publishing another crossword puzzle by Leonard Williams (political science) this Saturday, Oct. 11. Locally, it'll be in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.
Share your new and gently used children’s books. Our Education Office in Calvin Ulrey is collecting books for children in kindergarten through third grade as a project with the ISTA Foundation for Improvement of Education. Collection is Oct. 25 through Jan. 9. Observes Korrine Gust (education): “Thank you for supporting children in Indiana. This is a great follow-up to our Read for the Record event.”
Peace seeking. Stan Noffsinger ’76 was among 300 international religious and political figures, including Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who met Sept. 25 to discuss the role of religion in responding to global challenges and building peace and understanding. Noffsinger is general secretary of the Church of the Brethren.
