News to know...

1,145 … that’s our official enrollment this fall, with the largest incoming class (396 students) in more than 25 years! That means more faculty, more classes, five re-opened classrooms in Holl-Kintner, more student parking in the north Union lot, men in East Hall, added meal service opportunities … and lots more opportunities to grin and welcome lots more students! It took a village, led by our enrollment team, and will continue to take a village to ensure continued success of the recruitment effort as well as retention. But we know for sure, we’re a great team!

Have you signed up for diversity and harassment sensitivity training yet? They are Thursday and Friday, Oct. 2-3. Every employee needs to attend one of the sessions facilitated by Damon Sims, vice president for student development at Penn State University. All sessions are in the Lahman Room in the upper Union. Sign up here for the sessions. Questions? Contact our friends in Human Resources.

            Thursday, Oct. 2            1 to 2:30 p.m.

            Thursday, Oct. 2            3 to 4:30 p.m.

             Friday, Oct. 3                8 to 9:30 a.m.

             Friday, Oct. 3                11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Professor Stan Beery will retire, effective at the end of this academic year. Stan has taught mathematics at Manchester since 1979. Notes Dean Sharfman: “Stan has been invaluable to us in his ability to teach math to prospective teachers. His understanding of both math and of teaching is extraordinary and students have consistently respected his patience and deep care for them as individual learners …”

Volunteer to “Read for the Record.” We’re invited to join our Education Department and Manchester Elementary students in reading the children’s book Corduroy at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2. Everybody will read at the same time during the half-hour event designed to raise awareness about children living in poverty. Afterward, the children will get to keep the books, donated by our Indiana Reading Corps. Faculty, staff, community members … volunteer to join the party at Manchester Elementary! Contact Heather Shilling (education) to sign up.

Early academic intervention is critical in helping struggling or disengaged students succeed. Please intervene with any student you are concerned about, for whatever reason. For assistance in connecting students to campus resources, use the online SuccessNet referral.

Did you know we can purchase our Chartwells meal plans online? Cool beans! Breakfast, lunch or dinner. We can use the plan for our guests, too! Here’s the link. The plans end when the school year ends. Check out the new Lunch Club Card, for just a few meals at a time. Questions: Chris Yeadon or Dianna Stephan. By the way, The Oaks has grinders and pizza subs now, as well as our favorite coffee and bottled beverages. Check out food service changes and enhancements at Dine on Campus!

Mark that calendar …

Batter up … Camp Mack is next week! Vans for overnight campers leave at 7 and 8 p.m. from the College Union on Tuesday, Sept. 23. The rest of the vans head 7 to 9 a.m. the next morning for Camp Mack Day. Service projects, volleyball, chapel, tours, drum circles, crafts, climbing wall, food, Faculty vs. Student Softball begins at noon, canoe events … it’s a great day of celebrating and connecting. Directions to Camp Mack.

MC celebrates innovation, on the world stage. Kevin Sites travels into war zones across the world to report on victims of conflict, as a “backpack journalist” for Yahoo! On Friday, Sept. 26, Manchester College will applaud his unique approach to journalism as its “2008 Innovator of the Year.” Check out this incredible journalist’s Emmy-nominated work on his website, Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone. What an awesome first recipient for the College’s Innovator of the Year award! The convocation and ceremony begin at 10 a.m. next Friday, in the Union conference rooms. Thanks to Jim Falkiner (entrepreneurship) for making it happen!

Seeking Peace Institute students … Danielle Tate of Indianapolis Peace Institute visits campus Thursday, Oct. 2 to recruit students. Let Abby Fuller know if you can give her 10 minutes (or less) of class time to deliver a brief presentation about opportunities to study at the Institute. For more about course offerings and the Peace Institute, click here.

Wonder what really happened at the national party conventions? Find out next Thursday, Sept. 25, when Fort Wayne City Council members Karen Goldner (D) and Mitch Harper (R), both delegates to their party conventions, come to campus. They’ll address a joint session of Leonard Williams’ “Critical Connections: The Road to the White House” and Mary Lahman's “Discourse in Political Campaigns and Social Movements” classes. We’re invited:  2 to 3:15 p.m., Flory Auditorium.

Notable …

They know what to do in an emergency. As you pass security officers Jim Moore and Kent McCullough on campus, congratulate them on their completion of the state-certified basic Emergency Medical Technician course. Campus Safety now has five EMTs on staff.

Way cool … Tim Reed (music) will present his original electroacoustic work for fixed media, A Nonfunctional Teapot, at the Electroacoustic Juke Joint music conference Nov. 13-15 at Delta State University in Mississippi.

It’s time to submit proposals for presentations at the Fort Wayne Teaching Conference, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 13 at IPFW. Manchester faculty traditionally have a strong showing at this popular conference, as presenters, session leaders and attendees, Deadline for submissions is Oct. 31. Here’s the link

Get working on those wellness cards! All full time staff members should have their cards. If not, give Health Services at x5306 a jingle. Point-counting began Sept. 1.

Mileage reimbursement is 53 cents for cars. For College minivans it’s 58 cents per mile; for College vans it’s 68 cents. Expense report forms are in the Business folder on our U: drive.

Share your outside talents, interests, expertise with our students! Residential Life is signing up faculty who want to share their skills, interests beyond the classroom. Personal finance (Jen Lutz), juggling (Andy Rich), Celtic music (Greg Clark), hiking (Jill Lichtsinn), cooking (John Deal) … you get the idea. It’s about building bridges with students. Contact Allen Machielson, associate dean of students.

Re-entry. We’re good at that! Manchester College was represented at the second annual Indiana Re-Entry Conference for returned study abroad students last weekend in Indianapolis. Thelma Rohrer (international studies, academic enrichment, art) facilitated discussion groups and seniors Cassie Franks (semester in France) and Nicole Hammond (year in Ecuador) participated. The conference is a collaboration of IUPUI, Butler University, Franklin College and Manchester.

Have you signed up to receive emergency campus alerts? To get these text messages on our cell phones, pagers or other wireless devices, we need to provide the e-mail addresses, not just phone numbers. If your cell phone provider is Centennial Wireless, the e-mail address is tendigitphonenumber@cwemail.com.  Replace “tendigitphonenumber” with your phone number. Do not use dashes. For information on other providers, click here.  Campus Safety will help us sign up 5 to 7 p.m. next Thursday, Sept. 25 at the front entrance of the Union.

Human Resources …

We have a new prescription drug vendor, and will end our relationship with Partners RX at the end of September. However, effective Sept. 15, our new drug benefit manager is Caremark. We need to replace our blue benefit card with the new health benefit card we all should have received in the mail and tell our pharmacist next time we fill prescriptions.

New Faculty Manual and Employee Handbooks. Make sure yours has a revision date of 7/08 on the bottom of each page. If not, exchange your copy at Human Resources on the second floor of Calvin Ulrey.
