Community, students come together to
support Katrina relief
The Manchester College community and its
neighbors and friends already have collected more than $12,805 for victims of
Hurricane Katrina, with many more campus fund-raisers planned to add to
the total.
The donations include more than $1,000
collected during Community Day at the first Spartan home football game
last Saturday.
“The storm has reminded us of the importance
of community cooperation,” said President Jo Young Switzer. “Even at the
time of year when students are buying books and furnishing their rooms,
they are contributing generously to the fund drive on campus.”
A challenge among residence halls is under
way, and many student groups – from Campus Ministry to the wrestling
team – are coordinating collections.
Money raised will be turned over to the Church
of the Brethren, which is collaborating with Church World Service in the
emergency response. Manchester is a Church of the Brethren college.
This Saturday at a community Battle of the
Bands on campus, audience members will vote for their favorite bands
with cash to be added to the fund. The Battle of the Bands, for the
entire family, is set for noon to 7 p.m. behind the College Union.
With the Red Cross, the College will conduct a special blood drive on
Tuesday, Sept. 13. The event, organized by the campus Office of
Volunteer Services, will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the College Union,
lower level. The community is invited.
To donate, visit the campus business office or
send checks to Disaster Relief, Business Office, Manchester College, 604
E. College Ave., North Manchester, IN 46962. Please make checks to
Emergency Disaster Fund. The donations are tax-deductible. For more
