Funderburg Library Renovation

Funderburg Library’s major $1.4 million renovation in 1999 set a trend for comfortable and inviting space at the heart of campus. Gone is the old-fashioned card catalog. Now, computer stations in the newly named Merrill B. and Louise R. Frick Information Center help students and faculty access 180,000 bound volumes, more than 8,000 periodicals and 5,600 sound and video recordings. The new art and music room features improved listening stations, and the Peace Studies Library provides a welcoming environment. Reference librarians are close at hand, and Funderburg provides additional shelving for future collections. Especially important are the numerous places for quiet study, research, group projects, computer work or meeting friends.
Curving around the front entrance of Funderburg Library is Bigler Terrace – a patio with spacious steps that invites study and conversation. A handicap-accessible ramp sweeps to the doors. The terrace is a gathering place for students and a favored spot for campus events and celebrations. The terrace is named in memory of Richard G. and Marjorie Hayslett ’32 Bigler, generous supporters of Manchester College. |
