Safe Zone is Manchester University's
training guide that helps faculty, staff, and students better communicate and
understand the struggles of the LGBTQIA community on and off campus.
The Purpose:
Safe Zone allows for the campus to visual show how
open and aware it is of the LGBTQA community. It is a support system designed to
give students a better idea of who is accepting and readily available to talk
with about LGBTQA concerns or issues.
Training includes:
- Vocabulary building
- Counseling methods
- Professional point-of-views
- Personal reflections
- Scenario practices
- Insights into the thoughts of struggling students
Types of certifications:
- Comprehensive: indicates that card holder took
a two-hour Safe Zone course, and is comfortable with the basic knowledge
- All-inclusive: indicates that the card holder
took a four-hour Safe Zone course, has had personal experience with scenarios,
and holds a more in-depth understanding of Safe Zone
- Trainer: indicates that the card holder has
taken the all-inclusive four-hour training plus the extra time spent learning
how to communicate his or her knowledge with others

"If you see one of these stickers on a door frame
or window, you can rest assured that this person is an ally and is willing to
listen."
Trainings occur regularly throughout the year. Please contact safemail@manchester.edu to get a schedule or to sign-up for our next session.
