The morning and afternoon of the 2008 Spring Formal, the rain didn’t look like it was going to let up. Sometime toward the evening the dreaded weather subsided and allowed for people to not get rained on and ruin their hair, make-up and formal wear as they made their way to the Foellinger-Friemann Botanical Conservatory in Fort Wayne. The Spring Formal took place on Saturday, April 19, and among the lavish displays that included a temporary butterfly exhibit, a waterfall with exotic plants and flowers and access to all the gardens, there were silver stars that sparkled throughout the inside of the conservatory and dance floor for a twilight effect that set the mood for the partygoers. ![]() However, for one couple, the annual Spring Formal isn’t about all the glitz and glamour, but what this event symbolizes. The couple, Doniel Martin, a junior bio-chem major, and Nathan Kramer, a sophomore physics major, had their first big date at last year’s Spring Formal. “Last year Nate and I went with a group of people,” Martin said. “It was kind of low key at first, but as the evening progressed so did the attraction and we have been a couple ever since. The formal dance was fun and it was great to see all the different types of dresses that the girls wore and the beautiful and diverse exhibits.” Many of the attendees didn’t start dancing right away and chose to take a tour of the gardens instead while they waited for their friends and more students to arrive. In the dance area there were two tables set up, one for drinks and the other for desserts. A few people decided not to dance and to try and explore one of the exhibits more ineptly. “The hallway to one of the exhibits had a tunnel that a couple of people decided to climb through. “It seemed an awkward thing for people who were dressed up to do, but it was fun to watch,” Kramer said. Aly Hess, a first year English major with minors in journalism and psychology, had a great time at the Spring Formal. “As a first year, I was very impressed with the Spring Formal,” she said. “I went in not knowing what to expect and I really enjoyed being able to walk through the gardens and seeing everyone in such a different atmosphere. I think MC students are fortunate to have their formal at a place like the botanical gardens and I look forward to going again next year.” The Spring Formal was in full swing for a couple of hours, but as the evening carried on, many of the people got tired and left around eleven or soon after. However, it was a magical evening for the partygoers as they socialized and danced under the silver and sparkly star decorations and strolled through the beautiful gardens and exhibits at the Foellinger-Friemann Botanical Conservatory. “It was an amazing evening filled with beautiful dresses, friends, and music,” Martin said. “I’m very happy with how the whole night ended up and I can’t wait to develop my pictures from that night.” |
