The consultants in the Writing Center, located in the Success Center on the second floor of the College Union, are committed to help you with your writing and critical thinking processes. We also help with reading challenges.
Our suggestion for students in English 110 is: make an appointment with the Writing Center staff as soon as your instructor has assigned you to receive help. Please do not wait. What you will learn here will benefit your writing throughout your college career and beyond.
To be a good writer, a person must spend much time at the task of writing and revising. Transforming words to reflect our ideas is no less difficult than mastering physics and chemistry and mathematics. Writing, after all, is more than a craft. It's not easy to simply write and not be ordinary.
What We Do
At the Writing Center, you'll find writing consultants who are not only excellent writers, but who are individuals skilled at facilitating the writing process within the writer. Their interaction provides you with the support and perspective you need to help with the completion of your writing project so that you may improve your existing skills as well as your overall grade. Whether you need guidance formulating a topic, assistance with the transition from early idea incubation and growth, to a well-written, logically structured, and soundly argued final draft, including rewriting and editing, our consultants will help you succeed with your writing process. Remember, the better you write, the better you think!
What We Do Not Do
A Writing Center is not a guaranteed "A" on a paper. The consultant is a partner in helping the writer, but he is not a miracle worker, nor is he an editor who will rewrite the existing paper. For this reason, students are required to meet with writing consultants at the Writing Center and not to simply "drop-off" papers for editorial commentary. While we can promise that the paper will significantly improve under the guidance of our student consultants, clearly they cannot transform an "F" paper to an "A" paper. Also, like an exercise program, what a student puts into the meetings with a consultant will show in the results. The more a student brings to the writing relationship with the consultant in terms of his level of engagement, the better the final paper will be. |
