MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY COUNSELING SERVICES STATEMENT ON CONFIDENTIALITY
Each member of the Manchester University counseling staff values and respects the principle of confidentiality. The concept of confidentiality as practiced at Manchester University means that information about a person which arises during counseling will not be revealed to anyone outside the counseling relationship or conversation. Exceptions to this principle may arise when ethical and professional practice require action. Such exceptions include situations in which:
In the aforementioned situations, Office of Student Development personnel, outside agencies, and/or parents/guardians will be contacted as appropriate to specific circumstances.
In order to provide the most effective services possible, individual counselors routinely participate in confidential case consultation with other members of the counseling staff. In certain situations, consultation with other department directors within the Office of Student Development may be necessary in order to better assist the student. Consultation outside the counseling staff should occur with the student’s prior knowledge and approval, with the exception of the four points listed above.
The counseling staff of Manchester University is pledged to uphold the important obligation to safeguard information according to these confidentiality guidelines. If you have first-hand knowledge that a counselor has violated confidentiality guidelines, please inform the director of counseling or the vice president for student development so that appropriate action may be taken.
