Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences
Manchester University's Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences prepares students for careers as athletic trainers, coaches, fitness and exercise leaders, physical therapists, sport managers, youth sport and recreation leaders and teachers. Our graduates are service oriented and strive to continue professional development throughout their lives. Each program emphasizes the importance of fitness as it relates to the whole person - mind, body and spirit.
Students may choose majors in athletic training, exercise science and fitness, or sport management. Our physical education teacher education (PETE) program offers K-12 teacher certifications in adapted physical education, health and physical education and physical education. Students across campus can minor in physical education, adapted physical education and coaching. Students who want basic knowledge and skills in the area of promoting behaviors which positively affect health, including exercise adherence and access to health care, can minor in health promotions.

Our Department Mission
The Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences (ESS) is an active participant in the educational mission of Manchester University. Through undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, service, and clinical activities, the department emphasizes practical application of discipline-specific content knowledge, technological expertise, and scholarly advancement to develop young professionals in multiple health, sport, and physical activity fields.

Graduates of our program should be able to:
- Read, write, speak and present in a professional setting displaying content knowledge, critical thinking and ethical decision making.
- Understand the role of and apply scholarship, research and technology in the student's specific field.
- Continue to develop professional networks gained through internships, practica, volunteer activities, job shadowing, etc.
- Be continually service oriented.
