Sport Management Major
The business of sport has grown to a projected $600 billion/year industry in recent years. The explosion of growth has also generated a need for special training to operate, manage, and staff the various opportunities within the sport and recreation industry. At Manchester University you will obtain a comprehensive education in sport management areas including business, finance, legal issues, event & facility management, leadership, and field experiences.
Along with these courses, you will choose to specialize in one of two concentrations. The business track allows you to exploretopics such as advertising, organizational behavior, and marketing. These courses would help prepare you to work in a team's front office, the sporting goods industry, or athletic administration. The communication track allows you to explore topics such as sports information, public relations, and media. These courses would help prepare you to work in sports communications and journalism.
As part of your education at Manchester University you will take part in several hands-on classes where you will "do" sport management. You could be working with the administration of a team, parks and recreation, or campus events to name a few. Finally you will complete a semester-long internship that will be the capstone experience of your education. Manchester faculty have helped students successfully complete internships with minor league organizations, Olympic governing bodies, recreation facilities, and sports information staffs to name a few!
At Manchester University, the sport management program is more than just "loving sports" (but of course that helps!) Your education will help you be prepared to work in a fast-paced and exciting industry!
