The business of sport is a multi-billion dollar industry, generating a need for people who can operate, manage and staff various opportunities in sports and recreation. In sport management study, you’ll explore business, finance, legal issues, and event and facility management. Through academics and field experience, you’ll develop leadership skills, too. The sport management major at Manchester offers two tracks. In the business track, you’ll learn about advertising, sales, organizational behavior and marketing in preparation for work in a team’s front office, the sporting goods industry or athletic administration. Through the communication track, you’ll explore sports information, and public and media relations, preparing you to work in sport communications and journalism.

Program Highlights

  • Our students complete internships in a wide variety of settings including major and minor league sports teams, Division I colleges and universities, the NCAA, sport and fitness facilities, the Iditarod dog sled race, sport sales, and sports information and media.
  • Students at Manchester University get hands-on experience through projects and events in and out of the classroom, working with campus intramurals and Fort Wayne’s professional basketball team, the Mad Ants. Through numerous professional development activities, students network with industry professionals.
  • Several sport management students have completed sport management experiences abroad. The program has an international course that takes students to Ireland and England.

Recent Student Success

  • Zach Dashner ’14 has accepted a post-graduate internship with USA Football (amateur football’s governing body) in the grassroots programming office. Zach will be working with various communities to develop and run the Heads Up Football program (a collaboration between USA Football and NFL).
  • Tyler Stevenson ’14 will work a post-graduate summer internshipship with USA Track and Field, writing press releases, covering events around the country, and working with public relations and social media. He’s also been accepted to Valparaiso University’s Sport Media master’s program and will complete his graduate assistantship in  sports information/communication.
  • Katrin Muser ’14, who came to Manchester from Germany, has accepted a position as the events coordinator with the German-American Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta, Ga., where she’ll organize social and professional networking events for companies in the area. This job fits her well with a background in both sport management and business.
  • David Prokop ’13 is pursuing a master’s degree in sport media at Valparaiso University.
  • Joe Peters ’12 is the assistant director of stadium operations for the Midland Rockhounds, the AA team of baseball’s Oakland A’s.
  • Chelsie (Stout) Krill ’12 is with the Indy Fuel (ECHL Hockey) as the Promotions & Activations Coordinator. In this capacity she iwll be in charge of all sponsorship fulfillment and promotional activities at games.
  • Nathan Felver ’12 is an account executive with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. In this role he will be responsible for individual and group ticket sales as well as sponsorship relationships.

Program Learning Objectives:

Students who complete the Sport Management program should:

  • be able to critically apply content knowledge to real world situations and tasks.
  • be able to work effectively both individually and as part of a team to accomplish professional tasks.
  • understand and exhibit the porfessional ethics and responsibilities relevant to the sports industry.
  • understand and exhibit the role of professional development and continuint education as part of the industry.
