Dr. Janina Traxler

Dr.
Janina Planer Traxler, professor of French and department chair,
has taught at Manchester College since 1979. She received her B.A. (with
distinction) from Manchester with majors in math and French. Her M.A.
and Ph.D. are both from Indiana University, where she specialized in French
literature. Her interests range widely, from language teaching to medieval
literature, from contemporary novels to classical music, from art and
architecture to Arthurian legend in popular culture. As an undergraduate
she spent a year at Strasbourg University in Strasbourg, France. In
addition, she has lived two years in Strasbourg--in 1984-85 as faculty
in residence and spring director of the Brethren Colleges Abroad program,
and in 1992-92 doing research and writing supported by a National Endowment
for the Humanities grant. She has also served one year as a teacher
of English and French at the Northeast Technical University in Shenyang,
People's Republic of China.
Her teaching assignment at Manchester includes
French at all levels, Medieval and Classical literature, pedagogy for
language education majors, an integrated humanities course entitled
Life and Death, a January travel course in France, and Arthurian Literature.
She maintains a regular schedule of conference papers and publications
in her research area: Arthurian literature, especially the 13th century
Prose Lancelot and Prose Tristan; more recently she has explored how
popular culture uses the Arthurian legend. Recent travels include France,
Wales and England, Senegal, and Morocco. She especially enjoys teaching,
advising students who want to study abroad, international travel, sewing,
reading, and seeking the Grail.

Dr. Lynne Margolies Professor of Spanish |
Lynne
Flora Margolies, associate professor of Spanish, has taught at Manchester
College since 1999. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees
from the University of Kansas. Her areas of interest are Latin American
narrative (with an emphasis on the short story), film, translation,
women’s studies and service learning. Dr. Margolies has lived
in and traveled to many Spanish-speaking countries including Mexico,
Spain, Costa Rica, and Miami. At Manchester College she teaches all
levels of language, culture and literature and acts as the advisor
for Alpha Mu Gamma, the national language honor society. She also is
the faculty advisor for the annual Dean’s Scholarship Symposium.
Dr. Margolies serves as president of the Friends of the North Manchester
Public Library, and leads book discussions and seminars on diversity
in the community. She is an member of Congregation B’nai Jacob
in Ft. Wayne. An ardent Jayhawk basketball fan, Dr. Margolies lives
in North Manchester with Maggie the wonder dog and a large collection
of books and music.

Dr. Ingrid Rogers
Professor of Modern Languages |
Dr. Ingrid Rogers has been teaching at Manchester College since 1979. She is
a native of Germany and holds advanced degrees (Staatsexamen, 1974;
Ph.D., 1976) from Marburg University. In graduate school she was a language
major, focusing on English and Romance languages (French & Spanish)
as well as teaching methodology. In addition to Marburg, she studied
at Oxford, England, and at Paris, France. She has written seven books
and given numerous professional presentations in her field. In 1990
she received an award for teaching excellence and campus leadership.
In 1986, Dr. Rogers went to China to help set up an exchange program
between the Dalien Foreign Language Institute and a consortium of U.S.
Colleges including Manchester. She has repeatedly returned to Germany
for sabbaticals, research and work with the Brethren Colleges Abroad
program (Berlin, 1993/94; Marburg, 1999-2001). Dr. Rogers teaches Beginning
Spanish, all levels of German, and methods of foreign language instruction.
She also coordinates the student voluteers who teach ESL for the Hispanic community. Her extracurricular
interests include ballroom dancing, yoga, watercolor painting, camping,
and jewelry design.
