| Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
A minor in TESOL at Manchester College also responds to the increasing need in the U.S. for people trained to work with new learners in English. It matches the standards for the Indiana license in English as a New Language so future teachers will have the skills needed to enter the teaching profession both locally and abroad. Students who complete the minor must be proficient in French, German or Spanish at the intermediate level. In addition, the curriculum focuses on the theory, techniques and skills of teaching English to speakers of other languages by observing foreign language classes, tutoring international students as well as completing a practicum anywhere in the world. Students are also required to take a course in communication, economics, history, or sociology to gain knowledge of the cultural aspects of working with speakers of other languages. Completing the minor will give students the skills along with the confidence to be a success in teach English to speakers of other languages. |
