11.19.08 - MC FALLS TO EASTERN ILLINOIS 82-53 experiences along the way as 20 players, two managers, two coaches and the team’s athletic trainer made up the team’s travel roster. “Probably the best thing that our players experienced was the tremendous bonding experience that both travel and well-spent time together have a way of cultivating,” reflects Head Coach Brad Nadborne.

He added, “Our student athletes were outstanding representatives of our institution. If I had a “tooney” (slang for the Canadian two dollar coin) for every comment that was made to me regarding our players’ politeness and civility by opposing players, coaches, referees and fans, as well as restaurant and hotel wait staff, I could have easily paid for this entire trip. Overall, it was a tremendous weekend for our student athletes and Manchester College basketball.”ball.”

Manchester returns seven players from last year’s squad, and used a split-squad format to balance two teams with equal skill, position players and experience. Nadborne added, “With just 10 practices under our belt prior to the trip, this had the potential for some interesting situations, especially from the newcomers.  Surprisingly, at least to us as coaches, almost all of those situations turned out positive and after the initial expected nervousness and jitters, our players, young and old, did some great things on the floor and really competed!  I told them often how proud I was of them for their effort and ability to focus on the highly competitive situations.”

Manchester held three exhibition games each against Sault College and Algoma University. Algoma took second in the entire province of Ontario and returned a fairly full-squad from last year. In terms of sizing up Algoma, Nadborne described them as being “somewhat equal to us getting an NCAA tournament bid and winning a couple of games in the tournament.  They were about our height, a little quicker than us and a bit more athletic than us, as well.  Defensively, they were as good as any team we will face this year.

Scores for the games were as follows:
G1  MC 89 - Sault 48
G2  Algoma 74 -  MC 71
G3  Algoma 74 -  MC 67
G4  MC 67 - Sault 36
G5  Algoma 78 – MC 70
G6  MC 95 - Algoma 62

In terms of international culture, Manchester players saw fabulous fall colors as they traveled the entire length of the state of Michigan. Many student athletes experienced their first trip over the Mackinac Bridge, while others were introduced to procedures of crossing the border.  Nadborne wrapped up the trip by saying, “The team tasted a variety of foods that were Canadian in culture, including poutine—a heart-stopping, delicious potato dish smothered with gravy and cheese—as well as a taste of some local cider.  We sang ‘Oh Canada’ to a shocked, yet very appreciative group of restaurant patrons and staff at a restaurant that featured 100 different flavors of chicken wings, after eating a few hundred of those same wings. We learned that almost every Canadian ends almost every sentence with 'eh.'  We had it explained to us that almost all public signs have to be written bilingually, and the tensions that are attached to this process. We found that our officials in the Heartland Conference are to be appreciated more than ever.  We found everyone to be warm and hospitable. Overall, it was just a fantastic trip, eh!”
