Manchester College has more than 10 acres of land dedicated to sports and recreation for students, faculty and staff and utilized by the Spartans to prepare for athletic competition.
The PERC
The Physical Education and Recreation Center (PERC) serves as the hub of sports activity. Dedicated in 1982, the PERC includes classroom and office space; a complete fitness center; two handball/racquetball courts, a performance laboratory and complete athletic training room.
A large arena houses three full-length basketball courts and serves host to our men's and women's basketball and volleyball contests. The arena serves as an indoor practice facility for several sports as it comes with an indoor track and a dual chamber, 70-foot batting cage and indoor soccer goals. The main arena has played host to numerous NCAA Regional basketball contests, and can hold six wrestling mats used for the annual Spartan Mat Classic and NCAA Regional events. The PERC buildingexpanded in 1998 to include a separate gymnasium that houses a full-length basketball court and serves as an auxiliary gym and a practice facility for the wrestling team.
James Gratz Baseball Field
Manchester College's baseball field is named after long-time MC coach James Gratz, who coached the Spartan baseball team from 1963 to 1986. He remains one of Manchester's more loyal fans and attends most games. The natural grass field ranges from 335 feet to the left field wall, 360 to left-center, 400 feet to dead center, 340 to right-center and 300 feet to right field. Gratz Field is equipped with an infield tarp to help reduce rain delays, two batting cages, metal bleachers and a press box with phone line capabilities.
Carl W. Burt Memorial Stadium
Situated along the banks of the Eel River, Carl W. Burt Memorial Stadium was dedicated in 1988 in memory of the former head football coach, who produced 15 winning seasons in 17 years, beginning in 1925. The stadium has metal seating bleachers on both sides and room in both end zones for Spartan fans to bring their own chairs to relax and watch the game. The field is equipped with stadium lighting, a two-story press box with phone capabilities, and a concessions stand. The football team practices on an adjacent field with another field available for drills.
Track and Field
Manchester College has a nine-lane all-weather track, which was resurfaced in 2002. The track site plays host to a pair of invitational meets during the track and field season and the Wabash County High School Championships. For field events, new hammer and discus cages were installed in 2005 to meet guidelines and protect athletes and spectators. There are two cement shot put areas and two long jump runways, as well as surfaced high jump and pole vault areas.
Spectators at the track, as well as at baseball and football matches, enter through the R. Wayne Smith '49 Gate. The red brick and black iron structure is inscribed with Smith's favorite quote, "Honor comes from playing by the rules."
Soccer Field
The bleachers of Manchester College's soccer field are lined with flags representing the home countries of playerspast andpresent. The field is north of the PERC building and provides fans with metal bleacher seating or space to bring personal chairs or a blanket. The men and women share the game field and use two adjacent fields for practices.
Softball Field
The Spartan softball field extends to the southern part of campus, aligned next to the soccer fields. The field measures 225 feet to the outfield fence. Two newly renovated dugouts are available for both home and away teams, with metal bleachers and a press box nestled in between them behind the backstop. Fans can also bring lawn chairs to enjoy the game from either side of the diamond.
