3.7.08 - VALLEJO ENDS RUN AT NATIONALS WITH A 1-2 RECORD
Manchester College senior Eracleo Vallejo (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee) finished out his stellar career at Manchester with a 1-2 record at the NCAA Division III National Championships, hosted by Coe College. 

Vallejo opened the tournament with a first round bye, then fell to Jake Oster of Elmhurst by pin in 2:51 to fall to the consolation bracket.  His first round in consolations resulted in a 14-9 win over Brandon Music of the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, but fell in the following match 16-3 to Ithaca's Jon Gregory. 

"Eracleo wrestled his heart out today, like he always does," remarked first year head coach Matt Burlingame.  "There was a lot of great competition in his weight class."

2.23.08 - SPARTANS PLACE 8TH AT NCAA REGIONAL, VALLEJO NAMED TO WILD CARD FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Manchester College had four place winners at Saturday's NCAA Regional qualifier hosted by Wabash College.  Senior Eracleo Vallejo took second place overall and was named as a wild card wrestler for the upcoming NCAA National Championships, hosted by Coe College and Cornell College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. 

Other place winners for Manchester were Byron Sweet at 157 pounds with a third place finish, Joel Sherer took fourth at 165 and Matt Palladino took fifth at 141 pounds. 

Vallejo will compete in his third NCAA Championship meet this Friday and Saturday. 

2.15.08 - MANCHESTER PLACES SECOND AT HCAC TRI-MEET
Manchester's wrestling team finished with a 1-1 record at the HCAC Triangular Meet on Friday night, hosted by Rose-Hulman. 

Manchester opened with a 24-21 win over Rose-Hulman in the first match of the evening.  Winners for MC included Jason Ray at 125, Benjamin Scalise at 133, Matt Palladino at 141, Byron Sweet at 157 and Nate Hodges at 184. 

The Spartans fell 28-22 to Mount St. Joseph in their second match of the night.  Winners for MC included Ray, Palladino, Sweet, Joel Sherer at 165 and Spencer Fulk at heavyweight. 

Three Spartans finished the meet 2-0 and were selected to the First Team All-Conference squad.  Those on the list were Jason Ray (Liberty, Ind./Union Co.), Byron Sweet (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) and Matt Palladino (Winona Lake, Ind./Warsaw).  Mount St. Joseph finished 2-0 and took home Conference Coach of the Year and Conference Most Valuable Wrestler awards in Casey Stouffer and Elliott Spence. 

Manchester returns to action Saturday, Feb. 23 at the NCAA Regional hosted by Wabash College. 

2.12.08 - OHIO NORTHERN DEFEATS MANCHESTER 23-18 IN DUAL ACTION
In dual meet action from Manchester's Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on Tuesday, Manchester fell 23-18 to Ohio Northern to close out the Spartans regular season home schedule. 

Manchester opened with a win from 125 pounder Eracleo Vallejo in a 5-2 decision over David Penny.  Jeff Penny pinned Austen Ruich of Manchester in 4:31 to win the 133 pound weight class.  At 141, Matt Palladino defeated jason Van Atta of Ohio Northern in 2:15, while ONU's Jeffery Sommers won 11-4 over Matt Joyce at 149. 

The Polar Bears won the 157 pound weight class as Luke Miller defeated Byron Sweet 8-0, but the Spartans bounced back with a win by Joel Sherer at 165 in a 14-8 decision over Anthony Coleman.  ONU's Collin Swick won by forfeit at 174, and MC's NAte Hodges won a 5-3 decision over Benjamin Plowman at 194. 

Andrew Michel of ONU won by major decision at 197 by a score of 18-6, and Spencer Fulk of Manchester picked up an 8-3 win over Joseph Fisher at heavyweight.

Manchester travels to Rose-Hulman on Friday for the HCAC Tri-Meet.

2.9.08 - MANCHESTER TAKES FIFTH AT MID-STATES WRESTLING CONFERENCE MEET
Manchester's wrestling team took fifth out of 13 teams at the Mid-States Wrestling Conference meet on Saturday. 

The Spartans recorded 10 individual place winners on the day, led by junior Matt Palladino, who won the 141 pound weight class and was the lone champion for Manchester. 

Byron Sweet at 157 and Nate Hodges at 184 took third place, Matt Joyce at 149 and Spencer Fulk at heavyweight took fourth place while Jason Ray took fifth at 125.  Other place winners included Ben Scalise at 133 pounds, Rob Osborne at 197 and Tyler Lathon at heavyweight, as they took seventh place honors and Jonathan Pearson took eighth at 149.

Manchester returns to action Tuesday at home as they face Ohio Northern in dual meet action starting at 7:30 p.m.  The Spartans will battle for their 13th conference championship on Friday as travel to Rose-Hulman on Friday for the HCAC Conference triangular meet with Rose-Hulman and Mount St. Joseph.

First-year head coach Matt Burlingame takes over a Manchester wrestling program that has earned national recognition and continued success for the last 15 years. Burlingame wrestled at Div. I Virginia Tech, where he was a four-year starter and
three-time captain. He graduated 10th on the Hokies’ all-time win list.
  • Eracleo Vallejo finished fifth at the 2007 NCAA Division III national championship.
  • The Spartans have collected 12 of the last 16 conference crowns.
  • Manchester has nine regional titles and four Top 10 finishes in the NCAA Nationals.
  • In 16 years, 22 Spartan grapplers have been named Athletic All-Americans and 26 have been named Academic All-Americans.
  • MC is the only Div. III school in Indiana with a head coach who wrestled at the Div. I level.
