In a day
filled with symposiums and special presenters, Manchester College
dedicated its $17 million Science Center on Friday, September 16, 2005.
Construction began on the three-story 85,600 square-foot Science Center
in November 2003. Originally, the project was an addition and renovation
of Holl Kintner Hall of Science, built in 1959. But costs and other
considerations transformed the project into an entire new facility right across
the mall.
The
College has yet to determine the exact future use of Holl Kintner, which
will require extensive renovation. Classrooms are likely, after the
remodeling.
The
north wing of the Science Center is filled with classrooms,
laboratories, study areas, student-faculty research rooms, and faculty offices. The south end is home to
the Physicians Atrium, Flory Auditorium, a greenhouse and classroom/seminar
rooms.
Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics share the first floor. Biology occupies the second floor
and Chemistry encompasses the third floor. All of the faculty offices face the
mall, on the east side of the building. Glassed study areas on the
second and third floor also face the mall.
A three-story lobby
on the south end serves as a dramatic commons and be a highly visible main entrance to the facility.
Spanning more than two floors is a dramatic glass artwork.
The exterior of the building is glass, brick and stonework in harmony with the other campus buildings.
The
Science Center is on the site of Manchester College's former gymnasium/auditorium.
