Welcome to the first edition of The Intersection newsletter. The Intersection represents the department's role of bringing ideas together, while continuing to be a place where our graduates can meet for professional growth. The Intersection's logo was designed by Instructor Heather Schilling’s father, Allan White, a local artist.

We want to stay connected with you! Please send us news you want to share with other Manchester College education graduates.

Departmental Happenings

Indianapolis Peace House
Find out more about the Indianapolis Peace House on the Plowhares Collaborative website.

Field Experience Expands – During the fall of their senior year, elementary education majors participate in a methods block that includes a variety of field placements. Traditionally, students have spent one week at an open-concept school and one week at an urban school. This year, based on feedback from the past two years, the department changed its field placements to include one week in one of the student teaching placements and the other week in an urban setting. One of the opportunities students have is to spend a week at the Peace House in Indianapolis while working with classroom teachers at The Oaks Academy. Associated with the Plowshares Collaborative, of which Manchester is affiliated, the Peace House is a place for students to stay while doing field work in Indianapolis. What makes the field experience at The Oaks Academy unique isn’t just the diversity of the students, but also the private Christian structure of the school. During the week of Oct. 2 – 6, eight seniors, including Alyssa Bullerman, Katie Crosby, Kiley Dague, Amanda Hayward, Meganmarie Pinkerton, Leanne Rakestraw, Carrie Strahammer and Dana Zehring participated in this unique experience. Katie Harness, Katelin Harvey, Daidra Jagger, Sara Kauffman, and James Vincent participated during the week of Oct. 31-Nov. 3.

Changing of the Guard – In June, Dr. Lindan Hill, chair of the Education Department and head of Teacher Education, announced his resignation after five years of serving Manchester College. He accepted a position as Dean of the School of Education at Marian College in Indianapolis. Dr. James Riley, professor of education, was promoted to fill the department's top position.

Publications – Dr. James Riley recently published a book on public service entitled Learning to Serve, Serving to Learn: Leaving the Self-Centered Life Behind. Dr. Riley uses personal insights and amusing stories to remind us of the importance of serving our community and setting life’s priorities. Order a copy online at http://www.HighRoadFirstEditions.com.

Awards – In the spring of 2006, education instructors Schilling and Stetzel, along with librarian Jill Lichtsinn and chemistry professor Dr. Terri Salupo-Bryant were selected to participate in the Council of Independent Colleges’ Teach 21 Program. The Manchester team’s focus is on integrating technology and science into literacy instruction. The team spent several days in Restin, Va., and are participating in an online learning community with the other participating campuses.

Celebrations – In May 2006, the department celebrated the completion of an Ed.D. degree from Ball State University in special education and early childhood by Dr. Korrine Gust. We are certainly proud of her accomplishments!

Seniors Alice Bennett, Katelin Harvey and Sara Kauffman worked with 26 daycare providers and preschool teachers in their session on integrating science into literacy. After highlighting a variety of children’s books with themes about thunderstorms, the future teachers led participants in songs, crafts and several experiments that can easily be implemented in classrooms and daycare centers at little expense.
