Barb Burdge
Name: Barb Burdge
Position: Assistant Professor of Social Work, Social Work Program Director
Originally from: Akron, IN
At MC since: 2003
My favorite things
about Manchester:
The students!  They are amazing. They work hard, play hard, and have incredible vision for the world.  Their everyday creativity is invigorating, and they are infectiously curious about everything.  The faculty and staff have high standards for students---but the students also have high standards for us!  We work hard to meet their expectations not because we have to, but because we want to.  Learning alongside MC students is deeply rewarding---I don't think students realize how much they give back to the faculty and staff.  It's definitely a mutually beneficial relationship--everyone wins!
At Manchester
College, I found:
A place where people can be true to themselves. The Manchester community supports every person in being a whole person. You don't have to compartmentalize your life here or hide parts of yourself. You can be fully who you are, in all of your unique complexity and depth, while continuing to discover yourself and others as life unfolds.

Every day I am inspired by the people of Manchester College. By the students who are learning, caring for each other and becoming talented and exceptional individuals. By the faculty who are accessible to students, know each student individually and are truly invested in each student’s success. And by the staff who strive to make Manchester inviting, encouraging, challenging. Working here is so much more than a job. It’s all about the people.

The people
At Manchester
College, I found:

Purpose.  This is an awesome institution.  The faculty and staff work so hard to make a difference in the lives of our students.  On many occasions, I see people go above and beyond the call of duty to serve the College’s mission.  We face many challenges but with the people we have, it’s exciting to watch as we rise to meet those challenges.  And the College will be a much better place as a result.

The open-minded, progressive spirit.
At Manchester
College, I found:
... awareness. Every day that I spend at Manchester, my perspective grows a little more peripherally. I’ve learned much, developed socially and professionally, become aware of important social issues, and cultivated an appreciation for community in a global sense. I’m surrounded by people who think in terms of ideas, rather than just reacting to people and events … people that want to make the world a better place. Collectively, they’ve helped make me a better person.

The opportunity to create something of value.
At Manchester
College, I found:
a surprise.  I guess that figures when you come here from Lake County, Indiana at 18 years of age.  To quote one of my Manchester classmates, also from Lake County, [and there aren’t that many of us] “At Manchester I found that all the ideas were in play.” In my opinion, this is what higher education should be all about.  I give Manchester full credit for my strong desire to be a lifelong learner.

Name: Lisa Gregory
Position: Asst. Director of Alumni Relations
Originally from: Pierceton, Indiana
At MC since: July 2003
My favorite things
about Manchester:
Our College mission, seeing it in action every day from the staff and faculty. It's a statement of what we're all about and we actually live it! It's why I'm still here and why I don't need to post it in my office wall; its properties and values already existed in my heart as well as the countless other members that put make Manchester College a home not just an institution. The people I work closely with are like family members that respect my place in the office and understand the importance of my role at home.
At Manchester
College, I found:
HOPE for a FUTURE for my children. I found a place that embraces my ethnicity and my passion for diversity. I found a place that doesn't tolerate ignorance but embraces differences. I found a place where the students aren't the only ones that are learning on a daily basis but I am as well! I found an alumni office that is lead by example, works hard and laughs even harder EVERY DAY. I'm grateful for the things I've found and I know more is to come.
Name: Joy Groninger
Position: Director of Publications and Design

My favorite things
about Manchester:

Before working at Manchester, I could have an idea but it stayed there. Just an idea. I didn’t have the resources to give an idea life. Here, we’re challenged to think outside the box. And even though some ideas never make it outside a committee discussion, others frequently are modified and put into action. That’s fun. I love being part of that process, and it is great working with such creative people.

At Manchester
College, I found:

Respect. I’ve found a tremendous amount of respect in this place. People are kind here. Kind to each other; respectful of one another’s questions, dreams, challenges, decisions. When people come together in that type of environment, there seems to be no bounds to what can be accomplished. I hear professors tell their students, “I’m proud of you.” I see students opening doors for those behind them. I see staff members helping others when it isn’t their job. I’ve noticed that when we respect others, and in turn, we’re respected and supported, we tend to work harder and achieve more. Maybe that’s why companies and organizations that hire our graduates tell us Manchester grads typically have a strong work ethic, are value driven, and excel above expectations. Perhaps it’s because that’s how we’ve mentored our students, and that’s how we’ve treated each other. This thing about respect … we’re all in this together.

My favorite things
about Manchester:
the opportunity to serve
At Manchester
College, I found:

my home…again.  My grandmother, Joyce Leckrone, helped me in my decision to attend Manchester College.  She was a librarian here during the 60s and 70s .  When I decided to attend MC I knew I would be in one of the strongest accounting programs in the state.  So despite all of my Manchester High School friends wanting to leave North Manchester, I started classes here in the fall of 1988.  It became my home.  I met my wife here in January of our freshman year.  The professors were challenging, but always available.  Four years later I graduated with a degree in accounting, class of ‘92.

After working in the for-profit world as an accountant for 6 years I decided that I would rather serve not-for-profits.  I was taking a step closer to living my faith, and to be able to serve at Manchester College, my alma mater and the college of my church, it is the perfect blending of where my head and where my heart are.  Serving at Manchester College has allowed me to come home…again.

At Manchester
College, I found:
Vocation.  I first heard Frederick Buechner’s definition of vocation over twenty years ago: “vocation is that place to which God calls you where your deep joy meets the world’s great need.”  At MC, I have the opportunity to use my gifts as an administrator (I know, someone has to do it) to help recruit and graduate talented, committed students who will do big and little things to make the world and their communities better places to live.  The world really needs more Manchester students and graduates, and I’m glad that I can help connect each to the other.
Name: Carole M. Miller-Patrick
Position: Indiana Reading Corps Site Supervisor
Originally from: Baltimore, Maryland
At MC since: 2002
My favorite things
about Manchester:

I absolutely love all of the students here.  They are so enthusiastic and willing to work with others, especially in our community.  They are certainly service oriented and so want to give back!  I especially see this when I observe them working with the children in our IRC reading program. They will take the time to drive as far as an hour away weekly to mentor and enhance the love of reading in a child. Many will spend the day with a child who is struggling academically and socially.  Manchester College students make a huge difference in their lives!

At Manchester
College, I found:

a passion for service to others.   A place where I can be an integral part in working with students who are willing to give back to our local children and communities.  I came to Manchester College as an AmeriCorps Coordinator and worked for the Indiana Reading Corps. When I began in that position the program consisted of helping 50 children in three schools in our area.  I could not believe the number of children who were still in need! It is a strong passion of mine to instill the love of reading in children.  With the help of our wonderful and dedicated students we expanded the program to include 23 schools and close to 500 students!!  The enthusiasm and persistence of our students to make this program such an important piece in their lives as well as in the life of a child has been amazing. There is such a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and I see that in the eyes of our students and the young children that they work with each day.  Manchester College truly values service to others by “connecting faith with action and abilities with convictions”.

At Manchester
College, I found:
… optimism.  In what can be a troubling and pessimistic world, the faculty, staff and students at M.C. constantly give me reasons for renewed hope in humanity and the future of our nation and globe.  I am encouraged that so many of our students take the opportunity to become global citizens through travel abroad.

I found I can again be happy with my work. I can be happy because I am treated with great respect by peers, and my superiors. I can be happy because in a small, indirect way, I can see the positive impact of what I do. I am also happy that my many oops', gaffes, mistakes, miscues, debacles, catastrophes, errors, blunders, slip-ups, inaccuracies, blunders, bloopers, and faux pas' are tolerated or at least understood.
