Manchester College provides site
for Asia disaster relief donations
Manchester College is joining the Church of the Brethren and Church
World Service in collecting monetary donations to support disaster
relief efforts in Asia following the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami.
Manchester College will collect cash or check donations in its campus
business office through Feb. 1 and forward them to the Church of the
Brethren.
“As a college community, we are deeply saddened at the enormous loss of
life, homes and ways of livelihood experienced by the people of
Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India and other countries hit by the
tsunami on Christmas. Many individuals have asked ‘how can we help?’
Together with others, we can,” said Manchester President Jo Young
Switzer
Church World Service is focusing initial
support in at least three of the hardest-hit areas in Indonesia, India
and Sri Lanka, sending initial emergency material assistance shipments
valued at more than $900,000. The shipments include medicines and
antibiotics, family shelter kits and blankets. It deployed an emergency
assistance team Dec. 27 from its Indonesia office to aid in recovery
efforts in Aceh, Indonesia, the hardest-hit area on Sumatra's
northernmost tip. CWS also deployed an emergency response team to Sri
Lanka.
