Manchester’s Fall Play examines
“The Human Condition” with one-acts
For its fall offering, Manchester College will
present three one-acts that depict the life of characters in the Theatre
of the Absurd, says Theatre Director Scott K. Strode.
The Human Condition, Sense? Or Nonsense?
is a compilation of three separate one-act plays: The Hole by N.F.
Simpson, The Sandbox by Edward Albee and The Leader by
Eugene Ionesco.
“I decided on this title because some people have no problem making
sense of human beings, but others can’t make any sense of humans at
all,” said Professor Strode, chair of the College’s Department of
Communication Studies.
The shows run at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13
and Saturday, Oct. 15, with a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Oct. 16, all in
Wampler Auditorium. (The theatre is dark Friday night.) Tickets are $7;
$6 for senior citizens and non-MC students. For reservations, call

The cast includes six seniors: Brad Vah of Chesterton, Steve Grubb of
Goshen, Erin Gropp of Hudson, Rachel McFadden of North Manchester, Sarah
Oren of Vandalia, Ohio, and Zach Burton of Franklin; and sophomores
Aaron Hostetler of Bremen and Emily Hallgren of Fennville, Mich.
“It will be an interesting
experience for those attending as well as a challenge for the actors,”
says senior McFadden, who has roles in two of the three plays.
In The Hole, men working in a hole in the road have attracted a
curious audience. Each looking into the hole has a different
interpretation of what he or she sees. The Sandbox is filled with
symbolism about the modern American family in a tale of an aged woman
who has been in the care of her daughter and son-in-law. Registrar Lila
Hammer will provide background music on the clarinet. The Leader
presents scenes of brief encounters of people and their mounting
expectations of the arrival of the title character.
