A musical fairy tale and Gilbert &
Sullivan
bring local talent to MC’s stage May 14
NORTH
MANCHESTER, Ind. – Two fun operas, Hansel and Gretel and Trial
by Jury, take the Manchester College stage for a one-night
performance on Friday, May 14 for “A Night at the Opera.
Hansel
and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck is comprised of excerpts from
the classic fairy tale. The one-hour performance features complex
music, but is sung in English. Six children from the community join the
cast as angels in a production ideal for families directed by Debra J.
Lynn, assistant professor of music. The familiar fairy tale is about two
peasant children who wander into the wicked woods and come under the
spell of an evil witch who enjoys making gingerbread cookies out of
children. The siblings trick their way out of their dilemma.
Trial by
Jury is a 30-minute operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan, set in
Victorian times. Featured are Lee E. Krähenbühl, assistant professor of
communication studies, as The Noble Judge, and John H. Planer, professor
of music, as Counsel for The Plaintiff, with the college’s A Cappella
Choir as jury and chorus. In the operetta, Angelina sues Edwin for
"breech of promise of marriage." The jury and the chorus of ladies find
this a most-perplexing dilemma but the judge suggests a surprising
solution.
“A Night at
the Opera” begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 14 in Cordier Auditorium,
followed shortly by Trial by Jury. Admission is $3.
