Catholic Bishop Rhoades to discuss
faith and reason at Manchester

“We are called to pursue truth on the wings of faith and reason, not just one or the other,” says Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades, the leader of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.

That’s human nature, he says – and the topic of his presentation at Manchester University on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The public is invited to the free talk at 7:30 p.m. in Cordier Auditorium on the North Manchester campus. The Bishop also will field questions from the audience.

The event is sponsored by Manchester Catholics, a student organization, as part of an MU academic convocation series, Values, Ideas and the Arts (VIA). Roman Catholic comprises the largest religious affiliation of students on the North Manchester campus, where almost 40 religions are practiced. Manchester is a university of the Church of the Brethren.

“Bishop Rhoades has a youthful heart of love, peace and joy,” says Father Andrew Curry of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in North Manchester. “The public will have the chance to hear how he relates faith as a gift to help give life to reason.”

“We need to search for the higher truths and values that transcend the impressive scientific and technological progress of this age and build characters of conviction that transform into the leaders of tomorrow,” says Rhoades.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Rhoades to the leadership of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese in 2009. The Diocese serves 160,000 Catholics in 84 parishes and encompasses 14 northern Indiana counties, including five colleges and universities, four high schools and 40 elementary schools.

Bishop Rhoades chairs the Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life, and Youth of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He is a consultant to the Conference Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty and to the Conference Committee on Pro-Life Activities.

He formerly served as Bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg, Pa., appointed by Pope John Paul II.
