Act now to join the ultimate class trip:

London theater with Manchester faculty

Alumni and friends of Manchester College are invited to join students as they explore the stages and performances of London, England in a January class. Led by College music and theatre faculty, the class will attend performances and three workshops – including an Elizabethan stage workshop at The Globe Theatre.

A stage combat workshop at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts promises to be great, energetic fun. Non-students are welcome to join in the workshops or watch the students. Opening the course to alumni and the public enables the College to reduce the cost for students and non-students alike, said Debra Lynn, chair of Manchester’s Music Department. “Anytime we can get students and alumni together, it’s such an enriching experience,” she added.

The Manchester course is “English Theater,” taught by Lynn and Jane Frazier, theater director. “This promises to be a wonderful adventure,” said Lynn, who is particularly excited about the Elizabethan stage workshop. “To work with Shakespearean actors and in The Globe is amazing.” The Globe remains as it was in Shakespeare’s time.

The trip is not physically demanding and will remain in London the entire time. Participants also will have time to tour London and catch plays and performances on their own. Among performances the class will see: The Madness of King George and The Pirates of Penzance. Other possibilities: The 39 Steps, The Pitmen Painters, 84 Charing Cross Road and Comedy of Errors, and more.

But, registrants must act quickly. The deadline is 5 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 14 to register with a $500 deposit with Encore Tours. The eight-day trip is Jan. 16-23 for a cost of $3,099, including round-trip airfare from Chicago, unlimited Tube access, performance venues, meals, sightseeing, workshops, transportation and lodging (twin, private bath).

Contact Debra Lynn at 260-982-5296 or register online for “Showtime in London,” at www.encoretours.com. The group ID is 15555 and group leader is Debra Lynn.
