Manchester College student
makes history for her family
ShaNell Brazo is the first in her family to attend college, and she's wasting no time getting the full experience.
The Claypool, Ind., sophomore already is on the Dean’s List, is an officer in the campus history club, a member of the Theatre Society, a representative on the Academic Policies Committee and an Eel River clean-up volunteer.
She’s also a “Realizing the Dream – Outstanding First-Generation Student for 2011-12.” The state recognition by Independent Colleges of Indiana comes with a $2,000 award for the history and French major.
At a ceremony on Saturday evening, Nov. 5, Brazo will share the spotlight with her high school mentor, French teacher Lois Buss at Tippecanoe Valley High School in Akron, Ind. “She instilled in me a passion for French,” says the Manchester student.
“It is so good to see ShaNell realizing so many dreams,” Buss says. “I am proud of her diligence and humbled by her remembrance of me. I am honored to share this celebration with her, and I am excited to see all the plans God has for her future.”
Brazo will join 30 other first-generation award winners at the Indianapolis banquet and ceremony. All also are Indiana high school graduates with superior college grades and leadership. The award is sponsored annually by Lilly Endowment Inc.
