The Bruce Kauffman Award

2008-2009

In honor of the memory of Bruce Kauffman, a graduate who was a scholar, musician, and financier, Mark Johnston, a generous benefactor and Bruce’s college roommate, established a memorial endowment fund for Manchester College students who choose to study abroad or in special programs in the U.S. during their undergraduate years.  The fund makes off-campus study possible for students who are not likely to be able to undertake such study because of financial constraints.

This award is especially for students who have dreamed of study abroad or participation in a special program in the U.S. (full year, January session, one semester, or a summer) but who didn’t think it possible.  Students who are interested in applying for the Kauffman Scholarship for the academic year 2008-09 should submit an application to the Office of Academic Affairs by March 31, 2008.

This year, several students will be selected to receive the Kauffman Award(s). The scholarships, ranging from $500-$1,000, must be used for expenses related to study abroad or for study in a special academic program in the U.S.  This scholarship will be given in addition to other financial aid for which the student qualifies.  Students in all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply, but preference is given to students with majors in the humanities and whose life circumstances have limited their access to travel learning opportunities.  Preference is given to applicants who have not studied or traveled abroad extensively.

The attached application form outlines the details of the application process.  Please submit the cover page, with all attachments, to the Office of Academic Affairs by March 31, 2008.  Selection of the recipient(s) will be announced by April 11, 2008 and funding will be available to the Kauffman scholarship winner(s) for 2008-09 after July 2, 2008.

The award may be paid directly to an institution of study or placed in the student’s MC account for travel class expenses.  If the award is issued directly to the student, receipts for all expenses will be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs within two weeks of the student’s return.
