LANA GROOMBRIDGE ’66 Groombridge left an indelible mark on Manchester during her three-plus decades as a coach, mentor and professor. As a coach, she played an important role in putting women’s athletics on the Manchester landscape, leading the volleyball and women’s basketball programs and being an assistant track and field coach. As an educator and chair of the Exercise and Sport Sciences Department, Groombridge earned the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Honor Award, the association’s highest honor, in 2004.
DENNIS BILINSKI ’80 Bilinski’s claim to fame in Manchester University athletics was on the baseball field. His .478 batting average in 1978 led him to all-Hoosier-Buckeye Collegiate Conference, all-National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ all-district and honorable mention all-NAIA All- American awards. Two years later, Bilinski closed his stellar Spartan career by earning team Most Valuable Player and NAIA all-district and all-HBCC honors for former head coach and fellow Hall of Famer Jim Gratz’s squad.
MICHELLE BREWER ’95 CHEATEM Cheatem’s athletic success occurred in track and field. Competing for former head coach Meg Schneiders, she became a household name in the shot put and discus. Cheatem is still a part of the program’s top 10 list outdoors with the third-longest shot put (42 feet, 11 inches) and the sixth-longest discus (131 feet, eight inches) marks. She was a two-time Hoosier Collegiate Women’s Conference Most Valuable Athlete in the field events (1992 and 1993) and qualified, in the shot put, for the NCAA Division III national championships in 1993.
