Jim Falkiner holds an endowed position as the Mark E. Johnston Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies.
Endowed Positions
When a donor funds an endowed position or "chair," a permanent position is established at Manchester
College. The person who occupies this position has a specific mission with specific responsibilities.
This position carries a great deal of prestige, as it is funded by the donation and not
by any other source of funds. This kind of prestige enhances Manchester on several levels:
- Students respect the faculty member for the distinction it carries.
- Prospective students can be drawn to such a distinguished
teacher.
- Faculty consider endowed commitment as a major career enhancement.
The amount of the donation to fund such a position is significant,
because enough money must be contributed to support it for many years. The endowment
must cover present and future salary and benefit costs and other costs as negotiated between the donor and
the College. The position could be named after the donor or labeled in any other mutually acceptable way.
A donor could endow:
- A teaching position in a specific subject
- A staff position with clearly defined administrative or activity duties
- A new position the College has not had the
resources to fund
- An existing position to protect it from potential budgetary issues
Examples of this sort of arrangement currently at Manchester include:
- The Mark E. Johnson Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies
Due to the size of the donation and the complexities of establishing such a position, it is imperative that
the potential endowment donor contact a development officer
in advance.
