Tip #2: After you receive confirmation that your application has been sent to the supervisor, you may follow up with a phone call or a visit to let the supervisor know who you are; to check to see that the supervisor has received your application; to see if the supervisor needs any additional information.

20-Hour Limit Policy

Students are permitted to work up to eight hours per day and up to 20 hours from Saturday to Friday of each week during the academic year; up to eight hours per day and up to 40 hours from Saturday to Friday of each week when classes are not in session and during vacation periods. (Partial weeks are pro-rated—see below.)

This is a total of hours regardless of how many jobs a student holds.

These hour limits are College policy. However, for international students, this is also the limit set by the Federal government, according to the terms of the visas. Violating these limits may jeopardize visa status.

Working Over the Limits

Hours worked are monitored by the Office of Human Resources. Working over the limits will result in:

  • First Offense: The student is issued a warning and the supervisor is notified.

  • Second Offense: The student’s employment is suspended for a period of two weeks and the supervisor is notified.

  • Third Offense: The student’s employment is suspended entirely and the student is no longer eligible to work on campus.

When Classes Are Not In Session

I. Partial Weeks

Students may work up to 8 hours per day on days when classes are not in session for the full week, but hours for the remainder of the work week are pro-rated for a total as follows:

  • Fall Break

  • Thanksgiving  Holiday

 II.     Semester/Holiday Break

  • Finals Week

  • Christmas Break and New's Year's Break

*Exceeding these hours is a violation of the policy.

III.  January Session

Students who are not enrolled in a January session class may work up to 8 hours per day, up to 40 hours from Saturday to Friday of each week, providing the supervisor approves of these hours.

Students who are enrolled in any January Session class are limited to 20 hours from Saturday to Friday of each week.

The last two weeks of January are pro-rated weeks as follows:

*Exceeding these hours is a violation of the policy.

IV. Spring Break

Students may work up to 8 hours per day and up to 40 hours from Saturday to Friday of Spring Break week.

IV.  Summer Vacation

Students may work up to 8 hours per day and up to 40 hours from Saturday to Friday each week during the summer and continuing through the day before fall semester begins. (If a student is enrolled in summer classes, hours are pro-rated.)

Student Responsibilities

  • monitoring the number of hours worked from Saturday to Friday of each week. (Students may check their total hours worked in Ezlabor.)

  • inform the supervisor if working additional hours would put exceed the hour limits.

Supervisor Responsibilities

  • making other arrangements when a student is unable to work additional hours and for obtaining exceptions on RARE occasions when extra hours are needed due to the needs of the College.

  • informing the student employee(s) of this policy by posting this notice in a visible area for the student employee(s) and/or personally distributing a printed copy of this policy to the student employee(s).

Supervisor Exceptions

Due to the needs of the College, supervisors may occasionally have a need for additional student help. Supervisors must make every effort to fill this need by hiring temporary student help or by utilizing other staff. However, this is not always an option. Exceptions must be approved by Human Resources PRIOR to the event. Contact Anna Judy, x5559 if you feel you have a legitimate need for your student to work over these limits.

However, at no time may an international student work more than eight hours a day or more than the 20- and 40-hour limits. We do not want to put our international students in jeopardy of losing their visas.
