EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
All Police/Fire/Medical Emergencies: 911
Manchester College Campus Safety: 260-982-5999

FIRE

  • EVERYONE MUST LEAVE IMMEDIATELY when a fire alarm is activated, even if there are no obvious signs of an emergency.
  • If room is smoky, crawl on hands and knees.
  • Feel the door and door knob. If hot, don't open!
  • As you exit, close room door.
  • If alarm has not sounded, activate a pull station.
  • DO NOT use elevators.
  • DO NOT prop open stairwell doors.
  • Hold onto handrail and walk down the exit staircase.
  • Calmly evacuate the building to a safe location away from the structure.
  • Notify firefighters of location of persons with disabilities.
  • Do not re-enter the structure until authorized.

LOCKDOWN SHELTER IN PLACE

  • Remain calm. Do not engage the intruder.
  • If possible to do safely, quietly escape the area.
  • If escaping, do not carry phones or any objects in your hands.
  • As you move through open areas, keep your HANDS ELEVATED with OPEN PALMS visible, especially if encountering law enforcement officers. Follow all instructions officers may give you.
  • If you CANNOT SAFELY EXIT the building, seek shelter in a room where the doors can be locked or barricaded.
  • Close and lock windows, lower blinds, remain out of sight, turn off lights.
  • Once secured inside, take cover behind concrete walls, thick desks, filing cabinets, away from windows and doors.
  • Remain quiet; turn off cell phone ringers.
  • ONE PERSON should quietly call 911 and tell them where you are, where the intruder is, and the condition of the others with you. Follow their instructions. If you cannot speak, leave the line open so the dispatcher can hear what is happening.
  • If it can be accomplished safely, assist injured persons.
  • Do not respond to unfamiliar voice commands unless you are sure they are coming from police. Do not open the door until you are positive it is police or a recognized campus official coming to help you.

WEATHER EMERGENCY

  • Seek shelter inside nearest building, away from windows.
  • Remain in shelter until notified by College officials that it is safe to leave.
  • DO NOT use elevators.
  • Notify officers of location of persons with disabilities.
  • Stay away from electrical lines and devices.
  • During flooding, seek higher ground and avoid walking or driving through standing or moving water.

BOMB THREATS

  • Keep caller on the phone and ask someone else to call 911 and, if possible, x5999.
  • Obtain as much information as possible, noting critical details (times, location of device, why was it placed, caller's name, etc.).
  • Describe caller's voice, background noise, etc.
  • DO NOT TOUCH suspicious objects.
  • Do not use cell phones or other electronic devices in the area of the problem.

CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS

During a campus emergency, College officials will distribute information to the campus community using some or all of the following methods:

  • Wireless Text Message Alerts. Sign up online at https://mcconnect.manchester.edu
  • E-mails to all College employees and students
  • Messages through all College phone speakers
  • Public address systems
  • Manchester homepage: www.manchester.edu
  • Campus safety officers, hall directors, resident assistants and other College officials
  • Local TV and radio broadcasts

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

  • DO NOT touch hazardous material, or try to clean it up.
  • Evacuate room/area of the spill.
  • Close the room door to the area.
  • Alert others in the building of the spill.
  • DO NOT activate fire alarms or other electronic devices near the hazardous material.
  • As you exit the building, call 911 and x5999.
  • Notify firefighters of location of persons with disabilities.
  • Stay away from the area until instructed it is safe to return.

SYSTEM FAILURES

  • For power, water, gas, heating or cooling system failures, call x5061 during normal business hours. After hours, call x5999.
  • For telephone, computer and cable TV system failures, call x5454 during normal business hours. After hours, call x5999.
